"My family has given our HMO (which is registered as a nonprofit, by the way), approximately $132,000 since 1998 in premiums, not counting our co-pays."

That's the root of your problem. You're depending on an HMO for help.

Autism is one of the biggest frauds in the medical community. It is just an excuse to cover up for bratty behavior resulting from the lack of parental disclipline.

"Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, "Don't act like a M0R0N. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, idiot."

Mike, these dispicable, hateful lies have absolutely ZERO science behind them, and are a vicious attack against the most vulnerable and helpless of disabled children.
Autism is NOT a lack of discipline, it is a real and serious medical condition affecting millions. The sort of scum who ignore this legitimate medical condition and pretend that millions of people with autism just need to be told "stop acting like a putz" is the mindset that would kick someone out of wheelchair and say "quit sitting around, you lazy bum! Get up and walk!"
I hope you don't have to end up with a loved one with autism before you realize how truly cruel and stupid this attack on the most vulnerable of people is.

OH BOO HOO HOO! Keep crying me a river putz.

I am sick and tired of slothful parents and guardians who pull the autism card when their kid turns out to be a deliquent.

Read Proverbs 13:24 and Deuteronomy 21:18-21 (if you haven't trashed your Holy Bible yet). In other words, if you refuse to disclipline your children, then you hate God and mankind.

Denial is NOT a river in Egypt.

The Holy Bible is God's word to us and is NOT to be distorted, cherry picked or questioned in any way.

Agree with God, know heaven; Disagree with God, suffer hellfire. It's up to you.

Simple as that.

Okay..
I'll let you know I was diagnosed with "aspergers" at 15.

I'll be 18 in a couple months, and I'll be pulling the autism card so I can collect disability.

But! Autism does exist. It's just on a spectrum. Some will drool in a corner and crap themselves at age 21. Some (like me) you wouldn't know I had autism unless I told you, you'd just think I'm weird.

And about the bible...

Let me just say if god existed...
"Life wouldn't suck"
"There wouldn't be severely disabled people"
"And my life wouldn't suck"

The prosecusion rests, your honor.

I would argue that government wastes millions more dollars on practioners of the fraud of autism then it does providing health and welfare care for illegal immigrants.

But this is a "compasionate" nation full of suckers too timid to question authority. Anyone who believes that autism is a valid dysfunction would probably be stupid or intellectually lazy enough to believe in just about every pseudo scientific idea or sophistry coming down the pike.

A sucker and his/her money is soon parted.

Autism is a valid dysfunction. If you're going to say it's not then you might as well say "down syndrome" or "mental retardation" is bs also. If you've ever seen somebody with severe autism you'd know that.

Also, I'm about as fucked up as it gets, and I have the autism diagnosis.

I'm really am happy that you view me as a normal person, every autism related place I've been to I've been told that I'm not normal, and that I view things 50x different than the average person. Do I believe that? And wonder what its like to be normal?

Hey, maybe you're right, autism is a scam, maybe they just fucked with my head so much it lowered my self-esteem and that's why I have bad social skills, plus crazy thoughts often.

Actually, from my perspective, people like you are reason autism is associated with the word "retard" or "handicap".

So, next time I get called an autistic dumbass, I can thank you.

Let me quote something you said...
"The sort of scum who ignore this legitimate medical condition"

Autism should be ignored except in the most severe cases which require attention. Why should we be looked at any differently?

The thing with private insurance companies, is the employer could change that if they wanted to. The employer is the one who sends out what they want for coverage for their employee's, and insurance companies then bid on that. Insurance companies will never pay for anything that's considered alternative when it comes to autism or anything else.
In my experience, the insurance I had via my employers, non of them ever covered mental health or psych doctors except for my last employer and then my husbands. They were the first to cover these things and I never had an issue getting care and services for my son with autism.
The other thing about getting a diagnosis id even if the insurance covered that, that diagnosis might not be any easier to obtain. That's a doctor and experience things.
In CA, those regional centers have their own issues, and if your child is so called high functioning, good luck. They will try and weasel out of offering a thing.

As for Mike from CA, he's not even worth the effort to type a response to him. He's only here to agitate.

Most of the people you find on autism boards are probably the parents of children on the spectrum. So often are we here trying to advocate for our children (who often times are non-verbal or impaired when it comes to communication so we feel we have to be their voice and speak out for them against those that would take advantage). The thing is, we often forget that there are adults out there with autism, fully capable of speaking for themselves, but you must understand that our advocacy isn't the reason autism gets associated with MR or DS by average people, you can chalk that up to common human ignorance. Your average person when coming into contact with someone that is quirky and delayed in some areas, is likely to think " what, is he/she retarded?", its just ignorance. People like OkieDarren probably spend more time explaining the differences of autism and mental retardation then relating the two.
No one should ever be ridiculed or singled out for their differences but on the same hand, shouldn't be ignored either. Anyone with autism in need of help shouldn't be ignored just because they aren't severely affected, but they should all be RESPECTED. You shouldn't be looked at differently, ridiculed, singled out, or insulted. However (no offense), you are different, I have my own differences as well. We should all as a society be working to respect our differences and treat each other as equals while also respecting any special needs. Caring for each other should be a top priority, it is also a core value of EVERY system of beliefs and morals whether it be chrstian or buddhist,( hypocritical trolls like Mike should take note ).

During my month on the Greek island of Rhodes this summer, our next door neighbor had a son who was a functioning autistic. He was extremely bright, good with higher mathematics and a fun conversationalist. His major defect was his inability to make certain judgements and was a bit socially awkward.

Folks such as the talking head Michael (Weiner) Savidge, Mike and others are all way behind the times concerning this dysfunction and would probably come up with some horrible solutions of biblical proportions (such as witch burning) to "cure" autism. We will always have the flat earthers with us. The rest of us will try to help support research for possible prevention and a cure for conditions such as autism.

<quoted text>
I think part of the reason autism is.. well thought of by the average teenager in high school and even ignorant adults is the way the media projects it. I vaguely remember seeing a program on TV with my family a long time ago, I had to be around 13 before I was diagnosed, it was on autism. I remember thinking "I'm glad I don't have that". I could be wrong though, it could of been a dream or something lol! My point is when you see something on the news about autism it's generally about lower-functioning children.

And yes I am very different.

Yeah, I should care for people more I guess. But I have this "My life sucks and nobody cares about me, so why should I care about anyone else" complex. And I'm an atheist. I think I already said that. But the believer to non-believer ratio for people my age is probably 3:2, at least around here.

The bible is written by man that claim they heard voices about events that happened hundreds or thousands of years before them. The bible is not historically accurate. The events that were unexplainable were deemed "miracles of God" today science says when the sky goes dark, we have a solar eclipse. There has been flooding on massive scales but by region not global. Volcanoes are not God's way of punishing us but the planet releaving some pressure. So many things can be explained that were called miricales. I believe that there was a mastermind behind our creation that throughout the ages we have had help from the heavens. Do I believe that on source can make or break us, no. I believe we do that to ourselves and if life is good then "God is Great" if life is bad then "God hates us" If there truely was an omnipressence he would have abandoned us long ago. This world is too focused on Me Me Me to notice our conscience speaking.
