Yesterday had been designated “International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women” by the UN in honour of the Mirabal Sisters, (the Unforgettable Butterflies) from the Dominican Republic, who were gruesomely murdered for their political activism on November 25, 1960. The commemorated event makes the explicit link between violence against women and the chauvinism of men who use violence to keep women “in their place”.

MINISTER of Human Services and Social Security, Ms. Priya Manickchand, challenged all those present at the observance of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, on Monday, to make good use of the existing legislation.

Government of Guyana has placed alot of emphasis on fighting domestic violence. The public is being educated on this topic everyday in some way. More women are being made aware of the fact that they don't have to take domestic violence, instead they can seek help and the law is on their side.
