Looking for advice on which pistol to buy. After my first child was born 30 years ago I sold my pistol so as not to have it around the house.

Thats's like asking what's the best jeans to wear. It is purely a personal choice based on what best fits your hand, and what is more controllable for you.

My opinions....your mileage may vary.
1. Go to the range and rent several that you think you may be interested in. See which one feels best in your hand.
2. Don't go cheap. In most cases, and guns are no different, you get what you pay for. Remember.....you may have to depend on your handgun to defend your life with. I own a couple cheaper pistols, but they were the best quality I could get for the price at that time.
3. I would buy the largest caliber that you can control easily. For some it may be a .32CAP...for others it could be a .44mag. Me...I alternate between a .45ACP and a 9mm compact semi-autos.

My persoanl favorite is the Ruger SR9C.
