The weight actually doesn't bother me. It also helps control the recoil from the .308 round.<quoted text>M1As are reaaaaally picky about ammo to cycle properly and they're pretty damn heavy. Hadn't considered caliber minimums, but a 30-30 in forested land oughta do the job on deer. In Indiana (I'm told), rifles used to hunt with must be in pistol calibers, like 44s,.357s etc. There are M1As out there, the gummint isn't the only source.
Rifle hunting in VA is kinda sketchy. It depends on which county or city you are in. A lot of areas in VA are shotgun only. In Suffolk where I live, it depends on which side of Rt. 10 you are on if you can use a rifle or not. And if you do, you have to be at least 15 feet off the ground. Weird.
