I have to wonder, how many people used firearms to defend themselves/family/property in the same time frame?

Lies, damn lies & statistics... Just spin them how you need them.

In almost every case the killer owned a pair of shoes, in fact in almost every case they own several pair of shoes. Another amazing statistic is almost all the victims of violent crime in this country also owned at least one pair of shoes but usually more. This shows there is clearly a link between shoes and crime. Every military force on the face of the Earth wear shoes. These "assault" shoes have no business being in the hands of the public. The public has no realistic use for high grip, water resistant shoes. It is a proven fact criminals have a harder time getting to and from their crime scene without shoes. Everyday crime such as assaults and muggings would drop if shoes were banned as in the winter criminals would have a hard time searching for victims. Victims would not be as available on the street but would stay in the safety of their homes. The banning of shoes would just be prudent in these modern times.

We all know we can hang our hats on the Media to disseminate accurate details.

CCW folks are THE most law-abiding people on the planet. Besides being good citizens, in most places they have to jump through a lot of legal hoops including classroom and practical training to qualify for CCW.

Any organization with an agenda will gather and report numbers the way THEY want them to reinforce that agenda. In this case, these folks are starting out with fuzzy data, and then 'shading' it as they please.

Nothing they report can be taken seriously. However, it's ironic that this crap will come full-circle. The Media will report this study, and it's the Media who provided the misinformation this pile of crap is based on.

I think you are onto something. We'll have to see what magic the spin doctors put on it.
