'This isn't the Wild West anymore': Bill Maher...

Jun 7, 2014 Full story: The Raw Story 6

The thing about "gun culture," Real Time host Bill Maher said on Friday, is that there's not much actual culture - it's really about the guns, and their owners' unhealthy attachment to them.

Yet the hypocritical liberals sure would like to ban all modern firearms so that you can only have a six shooter or double barrel shotgun.

Of course that's complete nonsense.

Nobody's trying to ban all modern firearms, and two of my favorite guns are my Ruger Vaquero and my old Remington 3200.

You should stick to talking about things you know something about.

Not necessarily a bad thing, If we define modern firearms as those invented after 1899, let's see what we might have available by only allowing pre-1900 firearms.

Fully automatic machine guns -- The Maxim gun (recoil operated fully automatic) was being used on the battlefields as early as 1884. Colt machine guns (M1895)-- nearly identical in operation to those used now -- were used by US Volunteer Cavalry in the Spanish American War, 1898.

Semi-automatic pistols -- although nearly all modern semi-auto pistols are nearly unchanged from the Colt M1911 -- the blowback design of semi-automatic pistols remain unchanged from the Steyr Mannlicher M1984 and the Mauser Broomhandle 1996.

Pump action shotguns -- all modern day variants identical in design and operation to the Winchester M1897, a Browning design. Magazine fed lever shotguns have been around since 1887.

Bolt action rifle -- the most widely used sniper weapons in the world remains fundamentally unchanged from the Mauser M1898 -- widely considered the most perfect bolt action design ever.

Manufacturing techniques and material have changed in the last 115 years, but the firearms of our forefathers were just as effective as what we have available today.

Yes your liberal socialist savior Obama would love to impose an Australian style gun ban in the United States. In Australia all modern firearms are banned and there are severe restrictions on even single barrel shotguns and 22s. You shouldn't keep making yourself look like an idiot in front of everyone Dan the Man.

Australia does not ban "all modern firearms." There are restrictions on all guns, including modern guns, but they most certainly are not banned.

You shouldn't keep making yourself look like an idiot in front of everyone.

BTW - what's the gun death rate in Australia? 1/3 of ours? 1/5? Less?

Untrue, about Australia, not about Obama ...

Australian gun control restrictions are pretty much like those in the UK. Guns ARE NOT banned at all. There are as many as 3 million REGISTERED firearms in Australia (a country with only 20 million people) and an equal or greater number of illegal (smuggled or locally produced) guns.

Anyone who isn't a convicted criminal can own a firearm if they are willing to jump through the hoops. The trick is, as the category of firearms increase, so do the steps through which you have to go to obtain one.

At the first level, CAT A/B -- all non-semi automatic rifles and non-pump shotguns and air rifles of any caliber -- is the easiest. If you attend a police run safety seminar (2 hours at your local constabulary), have an approved safe, and join your state shooter's association, you can have as many CAT A firearms as you like. There are no limits on the purchase of ammunition.

CAT C -- Semi automatic rifles and shotguns -- If are a professional hunter or belong to an organization (shooter's club) who uses these, such as a military shooters club, and participate in 10 club sanctioned shoots a year, you can own as many CAT C firearms as you like.

CAT H -- Handguns -- Same as for CAT C, if you belong to a club that uses these firearms, you can purchase them after taking the appropriate training courses and remain a participating member of a gun club. People can get medical exceptions to keep the firearms if are medically unable to attend club events.

All firearms are registered with the state police and they will periodically inspect that said firearms are still in your possession and stored in the approved safe.

You can carry unloaded firearms (long arms and handguns) concealed even across state lines with no additional paperwork as long as you say you are going to engage in a hunting or shooting activity on your trip. Open carry outside of hunting and ranges is not allowed,

Ironically, there have been just as many mass killings in Australia in the years following the gun restrictions as in the years before, except they are mostly killers burning down public buildings such as a hotel or a nursing home instead of shooting. There has only been one school shooting in Australia since the restrictions went in to place -- but ZERO school shootings before restrictions.

Criminal gun violence is common in Australia, with a gang member or police officer being killed each week and never with registered firearms.

So, anyone who tells you that guns are banned in Australia, and it works, is blowing smoke out of their didgeridoo.
