Shorter playoff format better for viewers

The Monday playoff has always been a huge buzz kill at the end of great tournament. Hopefully the lost opportunity to have Tiger in a prime-time playoff duel will inspire the USGA to ditch this antiquated format.

First, I'm amazed that NBC hasn't successfully pressured the USGA to drop the Monday 18-holer. Even if it wasn't much better for ratings/revenues, it's frankly a fairer test of the two golfers involved at that moment on Sunday, which should be the point. Monday, many things are potentially different -- weather, physical condition of one or both of the golfers, etc. Should be a three-hole playoff -- a par 3, par 4 and a par 5.
Secondly, I was frankly glad to see Stuart Appleby crash and burn, after that horse's-ass comment he made, joking though it may have been, about throwing a club at Tiger's knee.
