Golf: Concept of par took decades to develop | The Columbus Dispatch

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

Talking par is par for the course at the U.S. Open. Already, defending champion Graeme McDowell has predicted no one will finish at par or better for the 111th U.S. Open, which begins today at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

Forget PAR, always play to win against your opposition! Personally, I think that PAR should be done away with entirely exept for as a reference point as to what an ideal number of strokes should be for a particular hole. Nobody has ever 'lost' to a golf course and--for that matter--no course has ever 'beaten' a player. You compete against PEOPLE.

I'd have a lot more respect for golf as a sport if there wasn't all of the emphasis on quiet and limit on distractions. Let's have a golfer trying for a 30 foot putt with his opponent jumping up and down, yelling and waving his towel around. Or let someone yell out at the exact time the golfer is hitting a tee shot.

Until that is allowed, golf imay be a nice game, but I'm not sure it is a sport.

Isn't that exactly what par is? A reference? And as for playing against people that is what pro's do. Also, golfers that play for money.

Me, I play to beat my previous best score. Most of the guys I golf with are better than me so I don't play them for money.
