Did Russia pay high price for winning Georgia war?

Though the dispute over who started the war between Russia and Georgia has yet to abate, most experts agree that it erupted during the night of Aug. 7 with an apparently well-planned and massive Georgian attack on Tskhinvali, capital of South Ossetia, which had won its de facto independence from Georgia in a brutal civil war nearly two decades earlier. About a dozen Russian peacekeeping troops died in that assault, prompting Moscow to send its North Ossetia-based 58th Army swarming through the Roki Tunnel the next day. Russian forces rapidly routed the Georgians and went on to briefly occupy a handful of Georgian towns such as Gori, where they destroyed Georgian weapons.

I doubt entire premise of the article. It is good for Russia in a long run to find out problems in the military long before the real war might happen. Historical parallel is Winter War of 1939. Also, S. Ossetia is like 50 miles from Tbilisi through a very good road. So strategically S. Ossetia is worth the money. Also, Azerbaijan practically has only one way to deliver oil and gas: through Georgia. Pipes and installation are very voluntary, they catch fire very fast and fire is very hot. What exactly EU is thinking? Hoping that new Caucasus war will never happen? Good luck.

58th army: 1800 soldiers,105 tanks.
4th air army: 21 aircrafts,60 soldiers.
Battalion "vostok": 360 soldiers.
Ossetian battalion: 500 soldiers.
Impressive is not it?
When Georgia only lost 168 soldiers,15 tanks and 1 aircraft.

Besserk, but those figures you posted are not of loses, but those are numbers of personel in those units - you just confused by sources - Batallion Vostok has exactly 360 men (do you know what is battalion - have you ever served in the army?- at least google for it)- as far as I remember batalion Vostok (this is Chechen batalion - for those who don't know) had only 1 soldjer wounded, but no casualties. Also 105 tanks is the number of tanks which took part in the war from Russia's side, not lost tanks.etc, etc... It is another story that Russians managed to capture more then 100 armor (tanks and armor vehickles) left by georgians on the battlefield. Also Russians sanked all Georgian navy in Poty (not in battle, but by shelling those ships abandoned in the port). It is not a matter of boasting - war is always tragedy. I am afraid that your bravado is bad for Georgia - it may encorage Saakashvili for one more crasy stant. I understand that you are very young person (from the nature of your posts)- you should be proud not for such false data of Russian casualties, but for those georgians who fought against nazi in WW2 in Soviet Army - 22 of them were decorated with the highest order -gold medal of the Hero of the Soviet Union, one of them - Kantaria, was the person who planted the Victory banner on the dome of Reichstag in Berlin while fighting was stll going on on May 1 1945.- yes, the person who did it WAS GEARGIAN! Not many know about it.

Well Vostok had 900 members and Russia-180 tanks,but anyway.
I know about WW2 yes it was nice times when we were fighting together as allies and I really value our nations 300 years friendship. I also respect you people and have a lot of Russian friends,but I just always critisize your goverenment and Putins regieme!!!!

Hay, Besserk, Nino Burjanadze, a former parliamentary chairperson and leader of Democratic Movement-United Georgia, said that Mr. Sakashvilly told here before the August war, that this war will be a cake walk, because Russia got rusty tanks, demonized army and stupid leaders. Chechen website wrote that 360 corpses of chechens were found after war....But anyway we can argue about it whole day,there is no point on that.
Recognizing independance of Suth Ossetia and Abkhazia was illegal and only 2 countries recognized it. Despite of Putins Propaganda it will still remain Georgian Land,you can not simply change History. This lands are such parts of Georgia just as Novgorod,Suzdal,Ryzan and other parts are historical Russian lands.
I also admire many russian writers,films,expectually your orthodox church,but I do not like Putin and his goverenment. I am also not fan of Saakashvili,but when it comes to your homeland it does not matter if you are opposition or not you should defend your country.

Now many documental films were published where ossetians speak before 3 days that they were prepering for war,so there is an evidance in both sides.
Anyway,for me personally Russian Medieval and imperial army were alway an example of strong and diciplined army,BUT...
Nowadays it's differant,you need reforms,soldiers wont better conditions,almost 2 soldiers surrendered Georgians for better living conditions,that tells you something. Also despite of some claims it is clear that this war was heavy cost,Pyrrhic victory,even many russians recognized that.
But still it is a huge army and I think even Saakashvili was not so stupid to start a war with 36000 soldiers against millionian army(30-1) I think he was hoping that Russians would not attacked our country.
war against ossetians was easy,but Russia had a huge army so that's the case. But the fact that strenght is in russians side does not meen that they should do this illegal things, as Alexander Nevskyt sad "Bog ne v sile a v pravde"(God is not in strenght but in Justice) so think about it.

Besserk, I want to remind you Winter War of 1939 with Finland, First Chechen war of 1996 and Afghanistan. All this small countries beat Russia. Also, Red Army, actually in a very proximity to 2008 August War theater, stopped a German Army in Caucuses. German Army was much better equipped, dominated the air and had excellent tank force. I guess we agree that Mr. Sakashvilly is an arrogant Son of a Gun and must be sucked and punished.

I agree,but still,Fins lost Viborg for that. Also as I have shown Georgian soldiers fought well,this should be valued.
