XYZ,

Folcroft fire company's reception hall/catering revenue is important to the department. Most public buildings cost taxpayers money. In order to have volunteer companies that are not entirely financed by the municipality, these facilities MUST HAVE A MEINS TO RAISE THEIR OWN REVENUE!!!!!

Moreover, I see no problem with having a bar for the firefighters who are off duty and want to have a drink among their fellow comrades. Its good for the department to have its members in one another's company as often as possible. For christ sake, these guys aren't paid a dime for what hey do! And they spend much of their free time, "after work" down at the department.

If those boys wanna have a beer, that is there business as long as its a privledge only extended to the department members!

On a final note Colwyn... A dry town...??? LOL

I wouldnt dare want to offend all of those holy rolling Quakers down there in Colwyn. DRY TOWN!!!! ARE YOU KIDDIN ME??????????

Ex 4th St... I guess all the Chiefs over the past few years were bad and couldn't do their jobs?

Ya think having to deal with bunch of boozers who controlled the money may have had something to do with it? You should think before you make a comment like that because for over a decade the boozers have ruined the actual firefighters. Anytime the past or present chiefs would dare to say the bar had to close, the boozers would kick them and their men out.
You should be asking where is all the money?
Just like all corrupt politicians I'm sure there is plently of space for these boozers in Federal Prison and justice will be served.

Joe,

The bar was not for the firefighter it was for the elite social members who never put their lives on the line fighting fires. The only time those people risk their lives (and others) was driving home pi$$ drunk.

It seems you didn't understand how their little operation worked.

Well done, Chief. I knew it wouldn't be long before you ran the firehouse into the ground. I'm just surprised it took this long. Congrats!

Deacon,

Thank you for being the only person on here to offer some sort of an account, describing what the hell has been going on down at Colwyn Fire Department.

I'd like to know more about it if you'd be willing to share the details known to you.

What can you tell me about this situation?

The colwynfire house has been run the same way since i was a kid, and im 30 now. The men who were drinking were not going out in calls so what is the big deal. This all started because some halfa$$ cheif couldnt do his job and was being made fun of. Grow up. I guess you learned youre lesson fro another ex chief(Ciagolone). He was a real cry baby too. The only ones who are getting hurt are the residents of Colwyn. How long will it take for Collingdale and Darby too respond?
the bar is also whites only and there is no place for this kind of kkk policy

Its about time....bars DO NOT belong in firehouses, paid or volunteer. Its ashame that the girehouse had to close instead council should have had the bar removed and allowed the station to remain open. For those fools above that said all firehouses in Delco are like that, I disagree I know many stations that do not have bars and do not allow alcohol of any type in the station

Everything that comes out of his mouth is BS and thats the real reason Colwyn's fire company is now gone! They are still trying to convince people that booze, gambling, firefighters resigning and missing tax dollars is no big deal? The more he talks the closer to the prison they get.

Nbc10 is a regional news website that serves millions so WHY is the unknown town of Colwyn suddenly the center of attention??
There shouldn't even have been a "Dry town" ordinance in the first place.. I'm sure the town could have benefited if they had lifted the ban, by selling a few liquor licenses to restaurants in Colwyn. That is, if anyone would even eat at a place in Colwyn... I bet the population of the town is around 200.

COLWYN COLWYN COLWYN thats all I hear about. It sounds like the name of a town in Ireland... nbc10 may as well tell Philadelphians about the affairs of Irish hill towns because that would be as relevant to us as this stupid Colwyn story.

MY BET IS NOW ALL COLWYN FIREFIGHTERS ARE RESTING AT THE LIME SPORTSWEAR CLUB.ITS SUPOSED TO BE A STORE BUT ITS ACTUALLY A BAR FOR FIREFIGHTERS IN DARBY BOROUGH SO WHATS THE DIFFERENCE?!
END OF 2007 WE HAD
Some residents in Darby Borough are angry after they said intoxicated firefighters drove a station truck struck their vehicles — again.

Several months ago, NBC 10 investigator Luann Cahn covered a similar incident. This time, she said police reports confirmed that a ladder truck from Darby Borough Fire Station No. 2 ran into several vehicles last Thursday.

A resident said doors and bumpers were ripped off some of the cars parked on Concord Road from the impact.

It was moving quick and they didn’t stop,” one resident said.

According to sources, the truck was responding to a fire close to the firehouse, but drivers took the long route through several other boroughs before smashing through narrow Concord Road.

The truck eventually made it to the fire call, but it was so late another ladder truck had been called in from neighboring Collingdale, sources added, noting that members of the fire company were seen at a party with an open bar earlier in the night.

There is also a bar in the firehouse.

The president of the fire company, Ed Neary Sr., said he was out of town when the incident happened.

Neary said he didn’t know who was driving at the time of the incident, and added that the incident was under investigation.

Last year, the fire chief of Darby Station No. 1 wrote letters to borough managers stating that Darby fire patrol No. 2 operated vehicles and manpower under the influence of alcohol.

“I’m going to definitely ask more questions now that you’re telling me,” Mayor Helen Thomas said

Still, Thomas said, police are not reporting any suspicion of alcohol in this case.

“I think it was 1 in the morning; everyone was in bed,” firefighter Mike Fecanin said when asked if anyone had been drinking before the fire call.

But neighbors said it just doesn’t make sense.

“I think it was reckless and dangerous,” a resident said.

NBC 10 obtained a police report that stated Ed Gannon, the third assistant fire chief of Darby No. 2, was driving the truck. He did not return calls from NBC 10.

The station also contacted Ed Gannon Jr., a local district justice and a Darby No. 2 firefighter, but he did not wish to comment

Darby Borough managers said Wednesday they are investigating allegations that some of their firefighters are drinking at their firehouse bar, and then going to fight fires intoxicated.

The NBC 10 Investigators Lu Ann Cahn reported that the charges come from other firefighters who said they worry that this type of behavior may lead to serious injury or even death.

Cahn reported that when they went to firefighters at Fire Patrol No. 2, some firefighters shut doors in her face, while others speed away in their cars. Others refused to answer the door or come out of the firehouse bar at Darby Borough Fire Patrol No. 2

One neighbor, who said she was a former New York City police officer, said she believes her car was slammed into by someone who had been drinking in the firehouse bar one night. The bar is legal, as it is a private club, but she said what she has seen sometimes should be stopped.

"I've never experienced anything like this," she said. "Where two or three times a week, the beer truck (is) coming up and rolling kegs down.
"I've seen them all pile out of the bar and into where the trucks are. You can see them weaving."

The chief of Darby 1, who is also the borough chief, made the allegations public. The NBC 10 Investigators obtained two letters he has written to borough officials, saying Darby Fire Patrol No. 2 operates vehicles and manpower under the influence of alcohol.

The chief wrote that, "when you add alcohol to the mix, it is a disaster waiting to happen." In another letter, he sites specific incidents.

# Sept 27, 5th and Ellis -- The chief wrote that one firefighter had alcohol on his breath and was belligerent with another firefighter.
# Sept. 18 -- Firefighters who were in the rear of a building at South 5th had alcohol on their breath. The chief wrote that the firefighters almost pushed the fire back at the crews entering from the front.
# Oct. 6, 612 Keystone Ave.-- One member admitted, when asked, that they were drinking prior to the call being dispatched.
# Oct. 9, 5th and Greenway -- Three firefighters observed another who is excessively yelling and cursing on the grounds.

The borough manager and solicitor said they don't know yet whether they'll consider a recommendation by the borough chief to close the firehouse.

Heres a little news from Ireland.
PSNI detectives investigating a suspected people trafficking ring have found a 12-year-old Nigerian girl at a house in Castleknock.

The girl has been taken into social care while one man has been charged in Northern Ireland in connection with the cross-border immigration inquiry.

The 51-year-old man faces six counts of helping unlawful immigration and is to appear before Antrim Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.

AdvertisementHe was arrested along with another man in his late thirties following Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) raids on two houses in Lisburn on Thursday.

Deacon, you are clueless and slander those older firefighters that do not get on trucks any longer. You obviously have never volunteered your time at a fire house. There is plenty to do besides fighting fires....like fundraising, fire awareness, community events like breakfast with Santa and toys for tots. Unless you have volunteered and are "in the know" about the true facts of what happened in Colwyn, your comments are meaningless.

Colwyn Resident: There was ZERO tax payer money stolen. All books are in order. Most people forget that the company gets audited by the State. As a matter of fact, utility bills were not paid for using fire tax money, utility bills were paid through other means like fundraising. Yes the chief is a member and can walk in there with his own beer and watch a ball game just like any member can legally. The true facts about the mis-managed Colwyn boro will come out shortly. Guess what... Colwyn use to two full time boro employees....since the Democrats took over, now the count is up to 11. 11 doing the work of 2.

What town does the fire chief live in? I don't think he's even from Colwyn. Also, the fire company is made up of VOLUNTEERS, don't recall seeing that mentioned anywhere. As far as alcohol having out of state stamps,it is quite possible since most of it is donated. I donated all the beverages left from my own wedding and I know some of it was gifted from other states.

No one has been accusing of "stealing!" Colwyn's fire department has always, always answered the call to duty in the 45 years I've been in this town - these "social members", who have been comprised of retired volunteers, wives (and/or husbands), family members of active and retired volunteers firefighters have continuously over the years raised much needed funds in support of the company, always without pay, again as an extended volunteer committed to the community. Since this small borough has been divided among party/race lines, you can bet we'll be seeing antics the likes of which would make Paula Brown (Darby/ousted mayor ) proud!

You "Earl" were the council president when all the drinking and stealing was going on and you did nothing about it? Now you want to show you face and make people think your trying to save the fire company. You are full of it! " God heaven forbid" something came out of your mouth was finally the truth? You showed the cameras the fire trucks but why didn't you invite them into the bar? Ya know the little red door?

why don't you reserve your comments to intelligent responses. Sexual preference is not at issue. What is however, is small minds, not unlike yours, thinking that their way is the only way. I've seen more harm done since the these people took office, then republicans and/or democrats in this town have done in the past.

Vote 'em out!
