The Brilliant Prudence of Dwight Eisenhower

Sep 19, 2012 | Posted by: Mr_Bill | Full story: www.theatlantic.com

Never showy or impulsive, the 34th president always played for the long term. As voters consider what qualities they want in a leader, a new look shows why Americans were right to like Ike.

Dwight Eisenhower is a president whose reputation has improved over time. When he left office, he was regarded as a genial, grandfatherly figure but also as a caretaker who was a little out of it. At the time, in January 1961, his Farewell Address presciently warning against the "military-industrial complex" was little noticed; far more attention was paid to JFK's soaring (and, in hindsight, overreaching) inaugural speech, promising to "bear any burden."

Ike was President at a time when nearly all Americans believed in the ability of both parties to put aside their differences and work together to benefit the country as a whole.

Eisenhower was a great president who would be appalled at the turn his party has taken. Just before he died Goldwater bemoaned the fact that the gop had been taken over by 'religious' lunatics. At one time the gop actually supported working people but today's party is a collection of vile social Darwinists!

Duh.

Another Lib caught in the " Information vacuum".

Obviously you don't know a friggin' thing about the Tea Party.

Plus the social conservatives had enough power for the motto " In God We Trust" to be stamped on U.S. coinage starting in the Ike era.

"Social conservatives" is a sugar-coated label for theocracy.

Mr_Bill knows plenty about the "tea-party." The ignorant, manipulated by their predjudices, to support tax cuts for the most wealthy segment of our nation.

Their tea-leaders, financed by BILLIONAIRES, leading the tea-folk like Judas goats, to economic ruin.

Their ranks, fortified by theocrats, and KKKer's, demanding more tax cuts for their wealthy bebfactors.

"Social Conservative" and Libertarian are mutually exclusive, yet they all unite to HATE President Obama.. It is pretty obvious tp me who these tea-baggers really are.

Now we hate Obama , just another RACE CARD play by LEFTY.

I have very strong differences of ideology with him but the hate I see most often on TOPIX is by LEFTY including you.

Soros? Don't I wish.
Please, Mr Soros, have mercy on Mr_Bill, out him on the payroll.

Soros has othing to do with financing thr tea-baggers, but the Koch brothers organized and piad for them to come into existance.

Now they are the puppets of the rich.

In truth, the regular tea-party refrain is that they HATE President Obama, and will do anything to replace him.

Hate is a special word that politicians don't often engender, but racial predjudice is the hotbed of hate in this country, and has generated plenty of political hate.

You yourself might not consider yourself a racist, but remember, WHEN YOU LAY DOWN WITH HOGS, you come up covered in pigshit.

That you brand Mr_Bill a "lefty" shows how far out your theocratic misinterpretation of the meaning of AMERICA really is.

Jesus is about LOVE, not hate.

Read 2 Peter 2, to find out about your political friends.
And, don't eat any vomit.

President Eisenhower was beloved of his soldiers. He was the general who led the liberation of Europe, and who cared for his soldiers.

The whole country trusted Ike, even if they didn't always agree with him.

His one major mistake was to side with DeGaulle, rather than with Ho Chi Minh, in the decolonization of Indochina. We paid heavilly for that mistake.
But, from his 1950's domino theory viewpoint, this decision makes sense. It is wrong to judge with hindsight.

His guidance helped create the 1950's, a golden age in America's history.

You branding the Tea Party RACIST shows how far to the LEFT you've gone.

The Tea Party elected more minorities in 2010 than Mainstream Bush in 2004.

You still believe , why , that the Tea Party is theocractic which is way off base. If the Tea Pary was theocratic I wouldn't belong.
The theocratic wing of the GOP likes Big Gov't , example Bush , and covering nude justice statues isn't my cup of tea.

Would JFK have supported a party that supports labor unions but stabs the workers in the back by supporting unbridled immigration, thereby diluting the domestic job market? Would JFK have agreed with proposals to increase taxes to allow Congress to continue spending like drunken sailors? And our income tax structure permits about half of the workers to pay zero taxes, while the upper 10 percent pay more than 70 percent?
