CRT's still the best bet for a sharp TV picture

Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Q Our trusty ol' 27 inch TV is on its last legs and we would like to replace it fairly soon with a HD set of approximately the same screen size.

Are you kidding that CRT is better than LCD or Plasma? In eaither case, the picture is better (and not just if you have a had version). If you have 20" LCD that is ED or SD, you'll see a nicer picture that is easier on your eyes. Just make sure to look at specs like the refresh rate (8ms or less) and the contrast ratio (very important if you're going to put it in a bright area). Don't get a CRT, they are also worse for the environment (use more electricity and the tubes have dangerous chemicals that are difficult to recapture). Don needs to take his head out of his you-know-what and see the 21st century improvements side by side.

CRT has BY FAR the best picture quality compared to SXRD, DLP, LCD, and Plasma. OLED, Laser, and SED may equal CRT eventually but as of now nothing can beat CRT. That's why they still used $43,000 Sony 16x9 24f/1080p CRTs in hollywood for film editing. CRTs have the BEST contrast ratio(infinate), they have the best motion resolution, least motion blur, best color gamut, highest color resolution, best viewing angle, and basically the most lifelike image. The only thing they suck at is weight and physical size.

Yes in many aspects of performance and specification, the crt tv still holds out very well and although it's slowly aging, It still outputs the best picture so far.

Recent improvements in flat panel technology such as with pioneer's kuro range of plasma screens and sony's high end lcd tv's show that flatscreen's in general are vastly improving all the time and some decent performing flatscreens can rival a mid range sony trinitron, but still not quite as good performers as a high end sony trinitron or loewe crt.

Forthcoming technologies such as oled, laservue, sed and fed are promising true successors to the crt and many of which could very well surpass crt's picture quality, particularly fed tv.

A good move currently in the tv marketplace would be to invest in a decent high specification plasma or lcd, keep it for more or less than 8 years and then purchase an oled, fed etc as by that time the technologies would have greatly matured and would be well established within the consumer tv market.

Or another option would be to hold onto your crt until oled, fed arrives.

Hope this info comes into account for decision making and purchasing.
