Rotoscoping is an odd animation. It's more limiting than 2D/3D, but it's definitely more freeing than live-action. It's been used for years and years, but it's best known more recently once a computer-assisted "interpolated rotoscoping" process was devised in the mid 90s.

... some time to begin to appreciate this particular form of animation. Richard Linklater's first rotoscoped film, Waking Life , was a critical success if a commercial failure.
