Awesome!!!!!! My iPod has been sitting around for months. I just gave up on it. I was not going to pay someone to fix it. The fix worked like a charm!!!!! Thanks!!!!!

I tried this, the first time it worked but when I was about to restore by connecting to iTunes it never showed up. Then it went back to the red x.
Now it seems u have confused it by trying hard.
Thanks for the solution and for sharing.
God bless you

Yeeeww! Really works, hold the menu and select buttons until you hear a weird tapping sound almost like dial-up internet then give it a good smack on the left hand side of the ipod!! All the music is back too! Yeeeeww!

I found the perfect answer to the red cross ipod problem. I read it online but can't find the forum now but anyway for anyone who has this problem this worked for me. Its completely counter intuitive but think, my iPod is broken and Apple will charge to fix it so it may be more economic to scrap it and buy a new one. In other words what have I got to lose.
Apparently the problem is caused because the hard drive is stuck. No, I'm not a techy either. Anyway the advice was to unstick the ipod it needs a good hard jolting bang. Yes that's right you have to hit it really hard. Sounds the kind of technical solution we can all apply, doesn't it? Well I did just that. I banged it very hand on the edge against the carpet. That stops damage to the casing but gives a jolting concussion which I was assured by the post would work. Well anyway I did just that and nothing appeared to happen. What a fool I thought. If wasn't broken it is now,. So I left it on the desk and went to tell my partner who ridiculed me for my naivety.
Anyway to cut a long story short when I returned to the study a few minutes later, lo and behold the ipod is working normally and has done ever since.
So remember if you get the red cross give the ipod a real good kicking. Shades of Basil Fawlty for those of you know John Cleese' Fawlty Towers comedy series from the 70's.

This blog/site is the best thing that has happened to me in years to do with technology. I am so thankful.

This is the one time when actually hitting something hard and repeatedly actually fixes something not makes it worse.

HOLY CRAP!!!! Thank you so much! It REALLY does work!! I thought I lost my data forever. Yes, I'm one of the idiots that didn't back up my data. But after a few tries, this solution worked!!

What I ended up doing- after hitting my iPod on my palm and hand- didn't work. After some frustration, I hit the side of my iPod on the sole of my shoe over and over for about a minute. The screen showed the apple this whole time, not the red x. THEN, I got tired and stopped, pressed the menu button and I saw my regular IPod screen. All my stuff!!! I'm so happy! Backed everything up first thing!:) But yeah, Apple told me there was nothing I could do and all data was lost. Thank you!!!
