Hey, i tried this because my ipod had the red x of course. At first it wasnt even clicking like it is supposed to. Then it finally started so i thought i was gettIng somewhere. I kept on hitting it and now It wont even turn on. I am getting extremely mad if anyone can help me that would be great. I have over 4000 songs on It and 12 movies so i would like it fixed.

My daughter's 80GB IPOD Video came up with the Red X and wasn't responding to anything. Apple said it was dropped (which it was) and wouldn't fix it in-warranty. After reading many bloggers recommending that I drop it or slam it on the table, I tried that - to no avail.
I came across the following on the Apple Blog and it worked! I had to try it a few times, but it came back to life. Give it a try:
Some times when you drop your ipod the lens inside skips(kinda like a record player). Reset your ipod by holding the middle and menu button until you hear clicking. then with one hand hold the ipod firmly and hit the side of it onto the PALM of your other hand. Sometimes this jumps the needle back into place but not all the time.
excellent post had the back off my sons iPod and everything until I came across this worked after about 5 attempts couldn't believe it thank

I was initially incredulous, however, after preforming the aforementioned procedure I was delighted to find it now functions once more.

Man I thank you much!!! I was absolutely upset and saddened at the same time when My ipod 160g flashed the red sign and I didn't get the extended waranty. I called Apple and little to know help. I went to so called geniuses and they held My ipod for months. I got tired. Did a quick search found this here blog. Tried it twice and My ipod. Is back to new. Thanks a million!!!!!!:-)

Well thank you very much for that tip. I bought my Ipod while in Kuwait. And like everyone else I started getting the red X I had tried everything but could not get it to reset. I actually ended up buying a 160 gb Ipod. I came across this article and done it. and now listening to my 80 gb classic. There were over 3000 songs on there and they are all still there.
Again thank you very very much
Haha thats where I got mine too and its doing the same thing

I have an added dilemma; Whilst charging my iPod classic (from almost completely out of power), it slipped off the table, disconnected (when it says on the ipod "Do Not Disconnect") and it hit the floor hard. Then the Red X came up.

NOW, when trying to do the "Smack Your iPod On Your Palm" Method, it barely has time to click and get smacked and possibly get fixed before it powers out. When I plug it in to get a better charge, it shuts off again and doesn't get charged. I plug it back in and get my next 20 second chance to smack it into health. This hasn't happened yet after many attempts.

The BEST news is that, at times, after smacking it, the clicking stops and you can hear it whiiiirrr inside but it either powers out or goes back to clicking.

(Hate to introduce additions to the problem being discussed on here!)
