I threw the i-pod at my husband after I slapped it on my palm a couple of times.
The throw was off, it fell on the wooden floor and lord behold, it showed the regular logo and we're synching it as we speak.
This afternoon I took it to the store, they told me that the warrenty was done and they would give us 10 procent off a new one.
Won't be needing it!!!!

ok dont sweat it..... hold down on the menu and select button until it clicks and resets then hold if firmly in one hand and slap your palm on the other side of the ipod, this should fix your problem, if it doesnt work the first time keep trying

so my iPod got this big old weird looking x on it a couple days ago and i basically freaked out...i tried everything...when i got to this site and it told me to press the "previous" button and the action button at the same time, i thought i'd see improvement, but unfortunately i didn't have a firewire cable...
i was about to lose all hope when i saw 7 comments in a row about when you reset it and the apple icon appears, throwing your iPod around, hitting it, throwing it against walls, slamming it on all sides...of course i was skeptical at first...but i became desperate...and so i proceeded to punch and slap and hit my iPod classic on every side or corner it had...then i waited for the screen to loud up...and what do you know it works....

I'M SO HAPPY, IF I HAD TO GET A NEW IPOD I WOULD'VE BEEN INCREDIBLY FURIOUS!

i seriously just tried this like right before i typed this comment...i'm actually in shock that it worked but i'm so happy <3 thank you thank you thank you!
everyone else who gets this red x should try it too. ;)

Okay, so.
I tried the whole throwing it at the ground thing, I've been throwing it around my house all morning.

I don't know if I killed it, but now there's a white screen, and it's stuck like that.

It happened to me too, im trying the charge thing now. But it didnt work when I tryed putting it into disc mode. Its really annoying. Im not sure the charge thing will work for me. Mine keeps making horrible skipping sounds when i try to press anything. It just makes that noise and shows the stupid X. I dont know what to do myself.

So I waited for the apple logo to come on then I hit the select button and the previous button. This took me to the whole systems analysis stuff, I selected auto test. . this asked me to hit the select button to continue (but I just kept it on this screen and did not hit anything) my ipod finally ran out of battery and I just plugged it up to charge. . right now its saying charging, please wait. . so I hope this works. .

Holy crap this worked. Follow this post from Brian. It doesn't work anyways so beat the crap out of it if you have too.

Brian's post:
This seriously works because I just did it(found it on a different site). Once you get the Apple Logo to come up on the screen (holding the menu and select button at the same time) bang it on the palm of your hand or a ground with carpet a couple times(semi-gently). The lens on the inside skips sometimes and this will get the iPod working again. Good Luck!!
it worked

This absolutely worked! I was skeptical at first... I had tried resetting, place in disk mode, did the apple online support thing but to no avail. This was the last straw before going into apple store (we all know what that's like--sometimes very good sometimes very bad).
So again the key is once you see apple logo appear in reset mode, bang the side of it hard a couple of times. It took me about 4 times for it to work. Once you do it right, the apple logo will remain on. Stop hitting it, it will reset to working order on its own. If you put your ear to the ipod you will hear some clicking, winding sounds. This is the hard drive resetting... THANKS GUYS FOR THE POST--TRY IT BEFORE YOU GO TO ALTERNATIVE, EXPENSIVE METHODS. PARTY ON!!!!

i just dropped my 120 gb ipod onto cement from the dock. the disk was out of place so people online said that restarting and hitting it against your palm would knock it back into place or letting it die and charging it (which didn't work for me) i tried and tried hitting it so much and finally i got to where it would turn on ! although it says 111 gb are filled with 'Other' and all my music is off it somehow. now i'm in a complete rut.
