The first iPhone WAS made with a SIM card that could be removed - easily. He needs to know what he is talking about before writing!

Do you know if there is a way to "hack" the iphone so it can be used with another network? I would pay extra to do that....

The whole point of making the iphone $400 more is because if they sold them for $199 without a contract, the sale of the ipod touches would go down which are sold for around $300. The iphone is better and would also cost less. Plus, Apple is trying to get rid of their ipod touches.

Dave wrote: The $400 premium is for current AT&T customers who aren't eligible for an upgrade. THAT is what you are missing, and why I'm rather irked at AT&T. That doesn't make sense either. With Verizon you can get a new phone at contract price by extending your contract another two years. I would assume AT&T has the same set up.

That is incorrect, you could remove the SIM card. You could remove it, put it in say a Blackberry or a RAZR then put it back into the iPhone...trust me, I know.

* conspiracy theory * I thought about the same thing thinking at&t probably gutted appl and discounting phone instead of sharing revs (like any other phones) knowing that they are the only 3g gsm provider in US. I think, at&t will not allow all the existing iphone users to upgrade to new iphone before thier 2 yrs agreement is over or atleast a good portion of it and now appl is trying to maximize (as usual) by selling these $500 phones to people who are still willing to pay the cost to get to new one!

Pertaining to the ridiculous price of $600.00 for a cell phone. Wake up and smell the coffee( the $5.00 a cup of coffee..) people.. its the same junk they started selling for $30.00.. it only costs that much cause consumers are suckers and willing to pay that ridiculous price. Remember when you drop it.. youll wish you paid $30.00.. STOP THE NONESENSE .. DONT BUY IT

The only reason why you might want to shell out the extra $400 is you are under the influence of drug or alcohol to do that.

I see no reason to unlock the 3g iphone if you unlock it and use the phone with say T-mobile. You can't use the 3g capability with other carrier so why not get the original iphone? Save yourself some $$$. Stefan wrote: Good article, but you got a few facts wrong. "But the first iPhone was made so the SIM card could not be removed." You COULD remove the SIM card from the original iPhone, but the phone itself was still locked to the AT&T network, so a non-AT&T SIM would not work in the phone unless you unlocked the phone. The new iPhone 3G will come with the same type of SIM slot where you can easily change the SIM card itself, but it would still be locked to the AT&T network.

AT&T said it will sell an 8 gigabyte iPhone for $599 and the 16 gb version for $699. Both are offered contract-free, meaning it sells without the usual two-year service agreement..........BULLSHIT!!!

Eric you are a prime example why news papers are losing money. Hiring idiots like you to write columns rather than placing well informed individuals who knows whats going on in the world.

Buying an unlock phone is not only a matter of who is the carrier in your country. i. e. I live in the US and I do not have any problems with having AT&T as a carrier. However, I travel overseas a lot. It becomes very expensive roaming in another country, due to you must also pay the long distance fees (if you call another country) on top of the roaming fees of $2.99 a minute. Therefore, I used to buy a local SIM card and use the phone as a Pre-Paid phone, avoiding the $2.99 roaming fees.
