I also have Dell Inspiron 6000 with AC adapter or batttery. I push the power button the laptop powers up for about 3 seconds then shuts off same as chaz. no screen no nothing. Do not know what can be causing this, but I can say that the power off went from desktop anytime to desktop at first load to no desktop to BIOS then ultimatly to even before BIOS. Seems like it's the battery but still researching this issue.

I have an 1150 dell, ac jack broke, i got a new one for like $3 on ebay, put it in and nothing.

Same as described up above, i found out through shear luck and playing around there is a little screw type peice right by the fan.

This is set to "open" or "close" I turned that to "open" and everything powered up

That screw by the fan is a lock for your CPU. It hold it down. I have a dell Inspiron 1750 and it is doing all that was stated above. I have replaced the power board, motherboard, and battery. When I first put the new battery in it powered up and asked me if I wanted to fix the problem. Restore to earlier. I had no problem until it shut off and did what other people are stating. I have noticed since it powered up now doesn't. The power supply light is getting dim when turning on now.
Any suggestions from technicians out there.
