I have to laugh at all the people that think they can't live without cell phones! I have my own business and have never owned a cell phone. It's never been a peoblem for me, but then I don't have to make those "important" calls, like finding out how junior is doing at soccer practice or telling my friend about the last time I took my car to the shop.

Well, I have a cell phone, rather than a land line. It is actually cheaper for my husband & I to have a cell phone plan than to have a land line.

But I agree about those "important" calls. However, when a TRUE emergency happens a cell phone can and has saved lives.

I do wish people would keep it down when they are having a phone conversation. Do you really want perfect strangers knowing the intimate details of your and your friends' lives?

What I find hilarious: the Pavlovian response to a ringing cell phone. I screen my calls and only pick up if I recognize the number AND want to talk to that person. If I don't recognize the number or don't want to talk, I just let it go to voice mail. If the caller really needs to get in touch, he or she will leave me a message and I can call back when I want to.

Obviously, you live a dull life! Ask a Real Estate agent, an Insuance agent, a Taxi driver, or even a bit part actor like me - or a cop or a fireman or (the list goes on) what life would be like for them without cell phones. I'll give up my land line in a heart beat - but you'll have to pry my cell phone from my cold dead fingers!

YEARS ago, we had to pay through the nose for two-way radio service for such jobs - and even when pagers came out, they were expensive and time-costly - your pager would go off and you'd have to find a pay phone to call your office or answering service to get a message usually taken by hand and often scrambled or distorted. And if you wanted to call your daughter in another state, the long distance charges were almost extortion! Today I call my son in New York or my daughter in Wyoming or another daughter in Arizona and pay no more than I pay to call my daughter in Salt Lake City.

My biggest gripe is that the cell phone companies have a strangle hold on their customers and stiffle competition by their ETF agreements. In Europe, one can swich cell phone companies almost as easily as they can switch the brand of "petro" they buy for their cars. This is because they not only don't have Early Termination Fees, but the actual hand sets can be converted from one carrier to another with relative ease.

One carrier here in the states even went so far as to force you to renew your ETF if you so much as added or removed caller I.D.! And they did this in the fine print of your contract - most folks never even find out the clause is there until it is too late.

VIVA open competition! DOWN with ETF contracts! HOORAY for Sprint and Verison for leading the way!

hmm...let's see...
I checked it out...there seems to be some pretty polarized accounts of what it's like to deal with Sprint...I've had a satisfactory experience with them...they've cooperated with me through the years, too...it's really the old, old story of 'buyer beware'...caveat emptor...

I use mine so little that I am talking to my wife about dropping it and just keeping her one for her use. They both are "bluetooth" and will work in our cars. She has a contract that allows her mucho minutes plus no charge after 9PM till 7AM amd all weekend and holidays free. She can bull for a couple of hours with several friends. Usually all I do is have it available for an emeregency.

Let's see a inexpensive plan $39.99 after the plan fee, land fee, county fee,911 fee, over the rainbow fee, ect. On average one will spend around $500+ per year when they can have that exact amount added to a 401k or IRA and create a nice nest egg for yourself instead of buying million dollar homes and other luxury items for people who could careless if the waves from all these towers are killing us. Look I love everyone so if you want to continue giving money out, give it to me I will gladly help out on your next past due bill.

Had and got rid of as most of my communications is via web and this gives me a record, if needed of all transactions.
Others who fall for a "MUST HAVE" are welcome to pay for that ego trip. Yep cell phones do and will save lives in an emergency that is great! BUT with so many available I let someone else have the trip of placing an emergency call.
I do laugh at the lines up to "GET IT FIRST" for electronic toys that, just like sheep!
The money I saved on a cell has paid for, in full, an investment property... I like that!

In the first place if you have the time most celphone contrac are in violation with federal gide lines especially people that live roual arears. At&T is the bigest offender, selling contrac they cannot serviceproperly they have in my opinion the most drop calls, for a cell phone to work properly it must be within one and one half mailes of an antenna. which is a federal requierment.

I do not have a cell phone, or anyone in my household. If someone wants to get a hold of me they will find a way, cell phones are not the only answer! There is still the old way of writing, land line telephones, knocking on the door or even email...come one be imaginative or lose your money.

I never thought I would use my cell very much, but during my house remodel the contractor & I are calling each other all the time. Both of us are wandering around all day & we would NEVER make contact on land lines.

Same would be true if a mechanic tried to conact me. Yes I could pick up messages at the end of the day but then the repair has been delayed.

I know its petty, but its "brakes".
I also think cell phones are highly useful and I am glad they exist. Paying attention is a requirement whether or not its a phone or a hamburger or drink. Distracted driver fines cover all these things. Some lady applying eye shadow whiles she's driving or a guy reading paperwork while driving cause wrecks, too.

Yep I was on the bus yesterday - and the DRIVER was texting while the bus was in motion! Slow, I grant you - not really unsafe, as we were barely moving at a walk - but still......

Welcome to the Twilight Zone - HOWEVER by the same token, I would not have been ON that bus if I hadn't been able to use my cell phone to contact the bus company and found out where and when to catch it! If I had found it necessary to locate a pay phone (rapidely becoming a relic of the past) the bus would have come and gone before I made contact. And I whould have had a two hour WALK to get home.

Granted, a kid in school needs a cell phone like a buzzard needs a propeller. But Gabby Jim made it clear that there ARE vital uses - I just don't think all those bells and whistles are necessary.

Is there a device out there where one person can alert another without a cell phone or monthly fees? I tried a walkie talkie, but did not transmit in the city. This is for an elderly person who just wants to alert her ride after shopping.

Sprint is about the worst cellphone company out there. I have had sprint for about 5 years. My contract should have expired last January, however my phone was broken and I had to get a replacement one sent to me from Sprint and since my broke phone was outdated, the new phone somehow ended up getting me into another 2 year contract. I never signed up for a new contract, but because my plan had to change for updated phone I cant get out of my contract without paying $200 early termination fee. That is so wrong when you never signed another contract. Anyone know how to get out of this nightmare? Half the time my phone never works anyways...Network Busy...etc
