Happy Birthday, Jules Verne, Science Fiction Author

Full story: findingDulcinea

Jules Verne was a pioneer in literature. With a powerful interest in writing and an imagination that was ahead of his time, Verne became a dominant figure in the science fiction world, writing about ideas that often didn't become a reality until many years later.

“Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” made a big impression on me when I read it as a child. Happy birthday, Jules.

Jules Verne wrote books about the invention of television (A Castle in the Carpaths), about helicopters (Robur the Conquerer), about space (From the Earth to the Moon), about submarines, and all kind of machinery.

His grave in a cemetery in Amiens, North France, is very interesting.
It's a statue of a man coming out of his grave and reaching for the sky. The stone is broken, and the torso of a bearded man struggling to emerge from the ground, with one arm stretched and the hand pointing upwards.
Very realistic and quite unusual.
I used to visit it every time I pased through Anoens, and took several people here, who were all amazed by the allegory in the sculpture.

Thank you for that info. Very interesting! He was a genius. Used to read a good amt of classics like Verne's books. Now reading more of contemporary works. A lil tough to maintain the balance...

Look for Jules Verne on Wikipedia.

There is a picture of his grave at the "Cimetieire de la Madelaine" in Arras, North France.
