Risk assessment for vitamin D by Hathcock, Shao, Vieth and Heaney shows that 10,000iu/daily of Vitamin D should be regarded as a Safe Upper Limit. Actual harm will occur eventually if 40,000iu/daily is consumed for some months.
Safety of vitamin D3 in adults with multiple sclerosis.shows that 280,000iu/weekly did not produce adverse events in this 28week trial but Vitamin D levels did rise to 386 +/- 157 nmol/L a level at which hypercalcemia may be expected.
Each 400iu of vitamin D raises status by 9nmol/L so 1000iu should improve the situation by 24nmol/L. This is fine in summer but in winter, when the average status is 40nmol/L, 2000iu/daily would ensure most people had the 80nmol/l that enables maximum uptake of calcium.
