I have a 2000 toyota avalon and every so often the engine will shut off several times after first starting it for the day, mechanics can't find any thing wrong. It seems to do it more when damp outside, but not always. Anyone else experience this?.

I have a '99 Avalon which the Check Engine light came on 3 months ago. I have since had my yearly inspection and passed. Yesterday my husband's 2003 Camry's Check Engine light came on also. He took it right into the dealer and they claim its the Emi8ssions System and will be a $500 fix. He is in the process of posting a complaint with Toyota, since this is the 2nd $500-$700 repair he has had on this car since it was new. I almost do not believe its the Emissions Control system and now wondering if Toyota is just looking to make some easy money. After all, my car has the same issue and nothing was wrong with the Emissions at all. I am very oonfused at this point ...any feedback anyone?

Po171 is system too lean try to check if your mass air flow on top of your air bonx is in good condition right voltage or not durty. If so change the mass air flow and clear the code. You will be ok

I have a 2000 Camery and my check enginee light has come on 4 times. Each time I have taken it to my mechanic. The first time the Emissions System was replaced $379.00 the other 3 there was no trouble found the the light was reset. The mechanic has run all possible test with no know reason why the check enginee light comes on. Could use someone help on this issue.

"Joe" Problem is caused by !. Gas tank cap not on tight or if that doesn'cure it. You may need to replace the Mass Airflow Sensor. part is about $150 and installation is a snap. To replace:Two screws to replace and located on top of air cleaner box. Reset the computer and you should be O.K.

Have it replaced when you get a chance.

A year and a half ago we had the same problem with our 2000 avalon. We did the first O2 sensor, light went off for a couple of weeks. When it came back on took it back and they replaced it again. Next time, a few weeks later took it back and the mechanic discovered there were 2 O2 sensors, replaced them both and the gas cap. In 2 weeks it came on again. Took it to the Toyota dealership and they said because of sludge we needed a new engine at our cost, over $5000.00 dollars. We proved all of our maintenance was up to date and kicked and screamed and they replaced the engine at no cost. They weren't calling it a recall because it poses no physical bodily harm but deemed it a courtesy replacement in good faith. In other words your toyota dealers aren't telling you the whole story. Call your local dealer and see what they say.

The engine light was off and on for two days then yesterday decided to stay on for good. Engine sounds good and I checked the gas cap. All fine. Any ideas out there. I have a 2003 Avalon.

2000 Avalon XLS, 105,800 miles; drove great from TX to MN; in MN engine light came on; local mechanic says sludge in the Cat Converter, would cost $11,000-15,000 to replace engine. Any other alternatives?

Any other alternatives? I wouldn't believe anything a 'local mechanic' tells an out of town driver. In CA one told me that I HAD to get the rear seal replaced on my Dodge Puckup. That was 12 years ago and I am still driving my new 1993 Dodge W250 with Cummins diesel (and hating the price of diesel fuel now). I'd change the oil and drive it to a major certified Toyta repair place, or home where you hopefully have a relationship with the people there.
