You couldn't be any more correct. Nice article. Because the Radiers have over extended themselves with big contracts to Russell, McFadden, Walker and a bunch on the defensive side of the ball, the team won't be able to keep Miller and/or other young players when their contracts come up.

I am sure they took the approach(although I think its crazy) that in a year or so they could trade some of these big contracts. It is not likely all of these signings will work out perferctly so you figure there has to be some trades somewhere down the road.

From the beginning of training camp in '07 until the final gun at the end of the regular season Miller demonstrated a rock solid set of skills and a consistency that coaches love.

His blocking was excellent and he always demonstrated a tenacity to get involved which you rarely see in TE's who can catch the ball. I expect his development to continue in the passing game because of more consistent QB play and the development of other positions. Plus, he's in the NFL a year now and has had some time to recharge the batteries after the whirlwind that is an NFL rookie year.

I think the Raiders salary cap landscape will be a different situation when it's time for Zach to get paid.

A good TE is so important to a passing that can move the chains. Good Luck in '08 Mr Miller!

Good observations re: Tight end Zach Miller. The comparative income disparities really stand out in a strange, strange way.
You also mentioned Ronald Curry, whose speed may not be elite, but his pure athleticism seems to be his great strength.
You might remember running back Marcus Allen. His speed was not elite. You would never confuse him with Bo Jackson. But what he brought to the game was very special. Those unique attributes, his vision, ability to adjust, helped the Raiders to win. I think the team has had much talent slip through their fingers in recent years. Maybe with this coach, this year...maybe after the new QB masters the basics, those special traits he has and the talent around him has can be exploited and translate into wins. They have some games to win, need to get used to winning, and there are some spectacular highlights just waiting to happen. Good article, like to read more.

I'd say that's pretty much right on the money. I too, saw Russell looking for Miller last year. I see that happening a lot more this year. With McFadden in the backfield you gotta think that defenses will key on McFadden. This will freeze the MLB and provide the window Miller will be looking to exploit. Once Russell hits Miller a few times in the game, the opposing teams front 7 won't know which way to go. I'm looking for the offense to take another leap ahead this year. Last year it was reducing the sacks from 71 to somewhere around the mid 40s. This year it will be TOUCHDOWNS!!!!! GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!

"With Porter gone and Curry the only other season pass catcher in the system, Miller is the best Oakland has at this point."
That statement implies that we actually got worse at the WR position. So you're saying that Porter was a better option than both Drew Carter and Javon Walker. Carter alone may prove to be better than Porter. Walker, if healthy, is an a totally different league than Porter. Dude....step away from the crack pipe....just step away....you've had too much.....
Oh, and I agree with a previous poster. Your insults don't go unnoticed. Of course the Raiders have a lot tied up in contracts. They're trying to improve. Oakland might be watchable this season? They were competitive last season too you moron. Now 2006 - THAT was an unwatchable year!

You are so right Ray. Miller is the threat that you don't hear much about from too many of the other so called "experts" of the sport. I love the NFL product but its a shame to watch how screwed up they've allowed the pay scale to get and allow it to get so far out of balance. I don't know what's more screwed up...NFL pay scale or gas prices.

Russell is going to essentially be a rookie this season. Given Al Davis' failure to upgrade the lines, the unproven level of overall offensive talent and the uncertainty of the coaching situation, isn't it a bit optimistic to start talking about breakout seasons in the passing game? Russell is going to struggle mightly this season. That you can count on.

OK, But what ever happened to Doug Gabriel ? When the Raiders let him go the first time I found him playing at New England for a short time, then back with the Raiders the year before last. Then he disapeared. This guy always seemed to make big plays at clutch times when I watched him play. I think Al sould sign him if he is available. What do you think ?

doug gabriel got cut from another team recently i think it was the bengals but i'm not sure bout that. all i think is that obviously all 11 players on offense and defense are vital when you're talking about NFL teams here. That's why the Raiders got murdered 2 years ago, but things are changing and it started last year. Lane Kiffin brings a different vibe to the Raider Nation(he's even sporting a goatee now). The way everything has fallen in place with two solid drafts(excluding Quentin Moses who was a lazy faz). Miller most definitely will break out cuz he is solid game in and game out and defenses will almost never target him he is almost overlooked in some of those games last year if they woulda just got him the ball. I absolutely agree. After a solid run game, then next thing a young QB needs to be successful is a quality TE.
