My question is how could they sign a free agent before the free agency period? I thought that was not allowed? Or was it because he'd been cut out-right?

Anyone?

agreeing to terms is not the same as signing so it is legal per se

Exactly, he was cut so he did not have a team wich means the dolphins can talk to him and negotiate with him, he cannot formally sign until tomorrow, but they are allowed to speak with him because he was cut.....we cannot negotiate with Brown or Scott for example because this is technically not a new league year which means they are still members of the Ravens....since Wilson was cut and had no team we are free to do everything but formally sign him wich will happen tonight at 12:01am.....the contract is probably signed, and will be submitted when the new league year starts.

He was cut before free agency so was available. This is a great move. Wilson(27) is 4 years younger than Bell(31 in March) but has the same amount of playing experience. His numbers are also better than Bell. He is ranked at the 8th best safety compared to Bell in the late 20's. Some reports have him as a free safety, others at strong. If he is a free safety, does it give us the change of signing Bell still?

You have to love that basically we are already a better team (signing Carey, Crowder, Wilson, getting Smiley, Thomas, Camerillo back) than the division winning team last year before we hit free agency and the draft. Nice job!

As much as I love YB this is a clear upgrade over either of our safeties. I would love to move him over to FS and sign YB and keep him at SS. Wilson is a solid all around guy. I'm loving what the trifecta has been doing.

somewhere else... Bell might be able to make the tackles but he never comes away with the INT... Sounds like this guy can make the tackles just as good as Bell plus he is a ball hawk. This is a definite upgrade. Good luck Y.B...GO PHINS!!!

It was because he was cut as you indicated in your post. The Dolphins went public on the signing so they are certainly adhering to the rules.

We all love Bell but this guy is younger and has no history of injury. He is just as good a tackler, though not as big a hitter, but better vs the pass.
Wilson should be a Fin for the next 5-8 years, Bell has a shelf life of 3-5 years given his age. Add in that he could go down with injury at any time, would cost the Fins about the same money and you have to conclude that this is a smart move.

from NFL Network:
The Dolphins signed safety Gibril Wilson, who was released by Oakland last week, to a five-year,$27.5 million contract that includes $8 million guaranteed and $16.5 million in the deal’s first three years.

Next up for Miami is re-signing free-agent safety Yeremiah Bell, which it hopes to do today.

Bell still might be in the plans...much better deaL for Miami considering what Oakland paid, six years and 37 million

Nice player pickup, but hope we can keep Y-Bell and Goody.

I like the move but I still think you bring back yeremiah bell. Simply because he can get the job done. This might be the end for Ronaldo Hill. But I think it's an upgrade for a secondary that needs an upgrade. Go dolphins!!
