I admit to being an optimistic sort of fellow. Just this week I decided it was a good time to put some money in the American stock market. But I think Ravens' fans should be very encouraged after the last 2 games.

Before the season started, I thought "Who can they beat?" Now I think "Who can't they beat?"

I believe that the Ravens have demonstrated that they could be potentially in every game this year, and all they have to do to be in the playoffs is to beat Pittsburgh in Baltimore by more than 3, sweep the Ohio teams in Ohio, and match Pittsburgh's record for the rest of the year while the Steelers play a more difficult schedule (first place schedule versus last place schedule).

This is not an easy task, but it is not impossible, either.

I had a hard time following your reasoning, however, I think you make a good points. There are those who see what they desperately want, a chance to be in the playoffs. There are those overly anxious pessimists who see things negatively, no matter what.
the season is just beginning, I take it a week at a time, see it as entertainment, and whatever the Ravens do does not make or break my life. My sense of happiness does not hinge on the Ravens, or for any other one thing for that matter. For Pete's sake, it's a game. Flacco will develop along with the offensive line and barring injuries, which are inevitable, we'll see what happens. I think if we win 8 games, that's a good season. I do hope one of them is the Redskins, but we have a hard schedule, which is good. Let's sit back, support Harbaugh and his staff and give them a chance to learn to work with what talent they have, including each other. Oh yeah, I hope one of the other wins is against the Colts as well. This team has maintained it's status as a defensive power, probably more because of Ray Lewis than Rex Ryan. That has kept us close in games over the years. I think this young man Flacco has the talents and characteristics to be a winner, but as we all know, one guy, just the quarterback, does not make a championship team. I'm gonna sit back and relax, be disgusted at the overal lack of self discipline and professionalism that pervades the sport, but try to enjoy what good things the Ravens accomplish.

With the Ravens, at least there is hope for some kind of change. They may get better, or they may get worse. With Peter Schmuck, it's always the same dribble.

Good piece Mr. Schmuck, you pretty much called it as it was, is, and unfortunately, probably will be for many (not all), Raven's fans. As an outsider looking in, I couldn't believe the swings of momentum when it came to how the Ravens would do this year, especialy Flacco himself.
April-August:'Flacco is a small school QB that needs 2 years of NFL bench time before it's even thinkable to put him out there with the big boys'.
August-Sept:'Well, when you think about it (Qb's dropping like flies), he is not ready now, but he might be by mid to late season'.
Sept-October:(Ravens win first two games)'Hey, get rid of those other bums at QB, Flacco is all world, the Ravens defense will do a repeat of 2000, and do you think our first playoff game will be at home or on the road?'
To be fair, the Ravens are better than expected, defense is playing great and the OL is doing a lot better than expected. The fans need to look at this as good, not bad. Playing Flacco now will pay huge dividends in the future. Tickets for next year? Nothing to sneeze at.

Great column, that is what I have been saying all along the Ravens' fans need to chill out , this team as of now , as far as I am concerned has exceeded expectations. I expect mistakes to be made by a first year quarterback and head coach. Raven fans just chill out.

The only comment I agree with is that we have NO deep threat at WR. I don't expect to be in the playoffs this year, I didn't after the two wins to the OhioWA teams. Rex Ryan is a great coach.

Those weren't real fans who posted those things. They were idiots and trolls with nothing better to do.

Now when a sports columnist starts writing about fans writing about sports...:)

I predicted 4-12 this year! You think I'm not a little happy about the competitive nature of these Ravens? It's always interesting to look at a board and notice some of the Baltimorons(even the ones that moved)that sound shocked and angry that a professional coach or player made a mistake.Sometimes, though,it is a little absurd.

I think what burst the early optimism for the team this year was the all to familiar self destructive play that the Ravens can't seem to shake. Stupid penalties, playing tough D for 3.8 quarters, then somehow when the game is on the line the Ravens fold, poor clock management, interceptions at the worst possible time. Characteristic play that has plagued the Ravens & kept them from progressing to the next level. We see Suggs showing the same immaturity that has hurt them on the field. it's tough to watch the poor play from the Billick years continue under a new coach. The Ravens have the talent to beat any team out there. Problem is they beat themselves way too often.

Peter! You really are a Schmuck aren,t you?(bet you never heard that huh?)
2 and 2 is not a bust. The Ravens are only 6 points and a bad referee call away from being undefeated. However, I don.t believe they will make the playoffs either. You're assessment of Flacco and Harbaugh are at the least unfair. Why do you and the rest of what's left of the Sun writers have to always be negative. It's tiring. The only coaching blunder that consistantly occurs is Rex Ryan blitzing on EVERY 3rd down. Teams know this and this is why they march down the field on us in the 4th quarter every game.
All I can say is, "Lighten up"!

This team has played four entertaining games and could have been 4-0. There are many teams that are wishing we would dump Ryan their way.

Well reasoned enjoyable article Mr. Schmuck. In your spare time, could you hold a seminar for under performing Sun writers such as Preston and Rodericks. Rodericks may require special education.

I agree - I've gone into this season with a low expectation due to the need for a learning curve for both the coach and QB - By doing this I haven't felt a huge disappointment - If we had pulled out those games that would have been great - but we are going to have growing pains and it will and could come against anyone in the NFL - I'm in the hope for a .500 season and if the cards fall right maybe a little better - In the off season it is time to give Flacco a big play receiver or two to throw to - Mason is a great possession WR but we need play makers - We also have to keep tuning the offensive line and shore up the secondary - Although Walker is coming round

Comeon Schmuck, call the posters out for what they are. They have been drinking the Negative Preston Kool-aid too long.

I still thnk the playoffs are viable. Depending on injuries and Flacco's progress. The Raven lost by three at the very end of the game to 2 very good teams. Two of the best defensive teams in the league, and there is already bashing on Flacco. The season is gearing up, they are one out in the loss column with a date against Pitts here. We get Oakland and Miami, they get CHargers and Miami. Injuries and learning on the job will be the keys for the rest of the season.

Get behind the O's - we are coming back - We didn't sign Gibbons this year for a reason - We have an outfield and McPhail will be at the winter meetings for the first time - Hang in there the ship is turning around - McPhail and company are about to start the engines - I believe next year we'll have over a .500 year and the following year we'll begin flirting with October Baseball - O is for October and the O's - So start caring and don't be a Fair Weather Fan -

Great scott, Peter, where have you been all of your life as a sportswriter? There have always been negative fans out there. You can't change them. Why get upset? You're listening too much to the boobs!
