300 grand?!

couldn't that money go towards something other than an away team? christ, it's like the schools are there to subsidize the sports.

It's the athletic departments budget. Totally seperate from the academic side of things. The football and basketball teams at U of I generate a lot of revenue, playing in BCS tournaments and the NCAA National basketball tournament, and for that, the school receive funds. Those funds go to the athletic department for things like this, travel expenses, uniforms, etc...
