I can shut my eyes and see Boller looking frantically left, then right, then seeing the rush and running for his life in panic. Or passing so he didn't get sacked, and the ball is caught--by the opposition. Flacco, on the other hand, goes cooly back, looks right, looks left and then fires these twenty five yard bullet passes right on the money. If he has to run out of the box, he's
still looking downfield, and if he has to run beyond the line of scrimmage he usually makes good yardage. While their stats aren't all that different it's totally obvious Joe is the real deal. Boller was one tough guy, with a cannon for an arm, but no accuracy, and a a hyper emotional makeup. I liked him as a person and respected him but it was obvious that he was just not a first string, pro qb. I wish him well though, and don't doubt that he gave it his very best, unlike Grbac, a guy who took the money, bailed out, and was a person with no character whatsoever. |

There is simply no comparison between Flacco and "Pro" Boller. It is comparing mac and cheese with jello. The mac and cheese is a smooth combination and jello shakes when you move the bowl. Boller was always ice skating in the pocket and never looked downfield. He would stare heap and mason like a pedophile and throw the ball into quadruple coverage only to get it picked. I used to hate looking at Billick's face on the sidelines when he done that, lips all puckered out ackwardly. Flacco has poise in the pocket and does not get rattled. Steps up when he needs to and now seems to know when to throw the ball away. I believe he will finish with more TD's than picks. I project him throwing 15 TD's and 10-12 picks while completing over 60 perfect of his passes. I can't recall a Ravens QB doing that.

The issue isn't really whether Flacco compares with Boller in his rookie year. The problem with Boller was that he never improved. Meaning he STILL had that same lack of poise, numerous "bad decisions" and a desire to throw to folks not wearing purple in his FIFTH season. I don't think folks had issues with Boller midway during his first year. But when he showed more of the same year after year, he lost the fans. Flacco already has some of the composure and pocket sense Boller never developed. It appears he is on an upward trajectory, not the same flat one Boller stayed on. He will get better in the next few years, Boller did not. He was as good in his rookie year as he was ever going to get. And that isn't acceptable for an NFL starter. In 5 years, you can compare Flacco and Boller. But I suspect there will be no comparison -- one will have become a legit NFL starter, and the other will be lucky to still be a backup someplace.

We will never know what could have been because Boller had the misfortune of playing for Billick.

Boller's 1st two years (25 starts): 14-11 record, 20 picks & 12 lost fumbles, only one game of 240 yards. Boller was ALWAYS the weak link on offense.
Flacco has held his own with or outplayed every QB except Peyton. |
