I'm glad this reporter used the appropriate headline and didn't try to downplay the bottom line of the merchants engaged in tourist-related busnesses. This honesty is unusual for Times reporters and may have been inadvertent.

It's almost as imortant as that headline about Democrats vs. Democrats on the Obama socialization of medicine plan. Maybe there is a ray of hope for the Democrats and for the Times reporters.

"El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said. "I would not trust my safety to the law-enforcement community over there (in Juarez) because right now, it appears they are inefficient."

That's the understatement of the year.

Juarez has traditionally been one of the selling points of the Sun Bowl. Things will never be the same, in either El Paso or Juarez, as they were before the present escalation of the drug wars.

it's no wonder out of town folks are leery of coming here to El Paso - the way the Times does their headlines of all the Juarez violence you can't tell if it's in El Paso or Juarez until you read the article. They should put it in the damn headline.

I have been in El Paso four times for work this year and it is very safe. Good people, good food, and should be a good game. Boomer Sooner!

Second oldest bowl game only to the Rose Bowl, second safest city in the nation and Oh yea #! must see bowl game pick by the Sporting News, what more could you ask for? The Sun Bowl in the Sun City, no problem other than trying to get tickets now, this sounds like an all around winner, now all we need is the Oklahoma fans to come up with another reason on why not to come ..........oh yea Stanford!

It may not be for everyone if your thinking of moving there but it is unique and ruggedly beautiful with a long and great history. "The Wall" doesn't have a clue!!

The city is not a dump, it's a great place to live and visit. Unfortunately, illiteracy is a problem, as demonstrated by "the Wall."

"The Wall" probably complains about everything in life so don't listen to that junk! The reality is that there is violence across our border, but we remain a safe place and there is lots to do in El Paso and Southern New Mexico. Welcome Oklahoma and Stanford visitors. Our house is your house, enjoy!

You mention Southern New Mexico. Don't forget Northern! All of New Mexico, for that matter, is a great place to visit and LIVE! Check out Old Town in Albuquerque. It is said that "if one moves to Old Town even for a month to visit during the Christmas season, you will never leave".

elp times didnt contribute to the out of town teams not wanting to come out to elp. CNN , makes constant reports on J-town's high crime rate and drug war all the time. Therefore the whole nation knows about elp and J-town. it just so happens it hurting el paso's image--badly.

I wonder how folks are commenting on the Holiday Bowl? Considering Tijuana is not so much better then Cd. Juarez. I like to tell my out of town friends is that the reason the drugs and associated violence is not prevalent here is because it is on its way to a city or town near you!!! PHX is worse for this than El Paso.
