It's nice to know Lovie Smith is feeling more comfortable these days. That was the idea behind jettisoning defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, wasn't it? That the head coach would have a higher comfort level with ...

Everyone loves Lovie so much that they fail to provide him with contructive criticism. After Rivera and Thomas Jones were let go, I aske myself why are they tampering with a winning fomula? If they struggle, you can only point fingers at Lovie and Jerry.
You're asking some very real/ difficult questions!

I have never coached at any level in in the NFL and perhaps that doesn't qualify me to speak about how Lovie Smith, Ron Rivera, or Bob Babich do their jobs. However, I have trained recruits in the Navy and spent most of my adult life supervising people at a variety of jobs. That said, I can say that if you want to get superior performance from your subordinates you must have their respect. They might fear you, hate you, love you, or even think you're the greatest person whoever lived. But, if they don't respect you, they will never perform at their highest level for you.

I think the '85 Bears had a great deal of respect for both Ditka and Ryan and that is why every player played at their highest possible level every game. Lovie Smith and his coaches might be well liked by their players, but I'm not sure they have the respect of all their players. There are many ways to earn people's respect, but the best way is to be fair and consistent in everything you do. Wishy-washy will get you zero respect.

I'm not ready to write off Babich just yet. The first game of the season, the Bears came in with swagger and dominated LT for about as long as any defense can. They didn't let Larry Johnson get his yards either. Why the sudden drop off in defensive production? Injuries and subsequent position movements are definitely a big factor but yes, something else is wrong. Why Ricky Manning has not been starting opposite Tillman these last couple of games is perplexing, especially with how the switches have affected Daniel Manning. The tackling has also been atrocious, which is on both coaches and players. Anyway, I do think the best games are ahead of us and the defense will return to form soon. They better.

I don't know for sure but I would think it would be better to stand the runner up first and then go for the strip rather than going for the strip and watching the runner go Linda Ronstand "Blew By You "I guess a lot of players are afraid of getting hurt and ending their Money Train careers. It's difficult to get a job with a college education that isn't worth the paper it's printed on.Would you agree to that Nate Newton?

I couldn't agree more on the Rivera release. The was no plausible reason to let go of the most successful defensive coach we have seen in Chicago since Buddy Ryan. I hope heads roll over this decision. Doesn't the decision ultimately fall to Angelo? He is the GM. What was he thinking?

Thanks for your candid comments.

I agree that Rivera was let go due to Lovie's desire for job security and control. However, when we lost Mike Brown at the beginning of this season (and susequently watched 4 pro bowl caliber defensive players suffer injuires) I knew that this team was in trouble. I can't blame Babich for that. What I do blame the coaching staff for is the total lack of heart and effort that the defense exhibited this past week. As a long suffering BVears fan, I always take pride in our defense regardless of how poorly the team plays. This team embarassed us all last week.

Last year, there was a rock ribbed defense and a qb whose shortcomings were completely overlooked or excused by the head coach. As one trick Rex's act became known to the league, his performances were impossible to even apologize for, much less accept, while said "D" worked overtime to keep games under control.

So, what does the power structure do; they replace the guy that coached that defense! The disastrous results show in a 2 and 4 record.

Now that Lovie has finally admitted his ongoing mistake (Grossman), there's a qb in there that can move the offense. Whether or not Brian Griese is an all pro is not the question. The question now is can he keep the ball for 45 minutes so that the defense doesn't trash the game! The Minnesota game certainly demonstrated that the Bears will not win a relay race. Someone has to stop the other guy.

Looking back over the Smith (and we cannot let Mr. Angelo out of this picture) era, we see a talented team that is spiraling steadily downward, rather than improving.

I am certainly glad that Mr. Smith is now comfortable, but fully understand that if he is, then he is definitely in the wrong job!
