It was fourth and considerably less than 1. A sweep or screen would have easily picked up a yard and the first down, based on how the WOU defense was set up. The way the HSU kicker was booming it, they could have tried a field goal after a few more plays. I still don't understand that call, but I have to say, the rest of the game the coaching and play calling was great. I was completely impressed overall with the coaching and team, and intend to attend a lot more games this year.

It's important to note that Sean Hill's numbers were inflated by that last drive in the last waning minutes of the game.
Before that, he was miserable. The 49ers were either very lucky or Arizona is much worse than we thought.

Great coaching throughout the game, yes. However I agree that the call was too aggressive. Smith may have had a fleeting moment where he actually thought he was playing madden...lets not forget that we had 2 time-outs in that incredible fourth and 1 moment. Why not try the hard count there? Hindsights 20-20 but if we would have brought in Bolt, the backup, ant gotten WOU to stack the line thinking sneak, the hard count might have been effective. As for Proulx...excellent toughness, coming back after that rough hit. If the play action was indeee necessary, the corner route might have been more managable than the aggressive fly.
