I'm a Forty Niner's fan. I agree that this is that make or break year. I held hope throughout this last decade. But Honestly I feel this is the best year for the niners. The pieces if the puzzle are in place to have a high octane offense again when you compare the last couple of years. I can see them winning and being .500 this year, nothing less. The lions are a completely different story.

the nfc west will be a pretty good division this year i believe. but i think the cardinals and seahawks will both beat them out in the division and get into the playoffs.

you are a complete idiot & its obvious you dont know football at all! preseason or not, ihave not not seen any form of a comp;etent offense until martz arrived this season. Our offensive players actually enjoy playing football again because they finally have someone who can get the ball to them in the right spots. Face it, alex is a bust. Good riddance #11,it's o'sullivans team now.! Get use to it alex suppoters.

YOu are just about as right as can possibly be. Since I was eight years old I have been a Niners fan and every years disappointments are compounded by the fact there is no improvement. If there was a hint of a running game - the next year its a bust. If the young defense showed signs of stepping up, they dwindled and fall apart. I have been a fan of Mike Nolan since he joined the organization, he seems like a good leader, but i have to agree that if they go bust again this year - he will have to go.

I just wasted minutes of my life reading your article and it was a complete waste. Your evaluation of J.T. O'sullivan and Alex Smith are juvenile and so off base that it would take me several pages to refute each one of your many misguided arguments. Needless to say, I doubt anyone takes you seriously as a football analyst. I just thought you should know that you are not fooling/entertaining/informing anybody.

shit brady has had three different offensive co ordinators and he still wins games so that excuse is bullshit, you can either play or you cant, big ben has had different oc's too, montana had different oc's and different teams and still won, garcia has played in a bunch of different systems and has played good and bad but alex has never played good 16td and 16int for 50 million just doesnt work i would ahve liked to see a brady quinn trade but my point is that winners win regardless of the oc and losers use excuses like o he had 4 different oc's, hmm utah used a shotgun spread offense similar to martz and he got shown up b y a guy who has never started a game in the nfl alex just doesnt have the tools unfortunately

JT O sullivan did not win the job honestly.; Mike Nolan has undermined this team along with Mike Martz. I want Alex Smith reinstated by 09, Mike Nolan fired, and JT O Sullivan off the team. I see no way we pay O Sullivan 10 million dollars off a Franchise tag. QUicker we suck, easier it is to dump JT. JT Is a Trent Dilfer wannabe, moment he does anything, he's off the team by 09 like Dilfer was booted from the Ravens Superbowl win. I hope to God we don't have a Kurt Warner 2 in JT O Suck.

You people that like JT O Sullivan, check yourselves over to the St. Louis Rams or some other team. JT will never be a lifelong 49er. He sucks!

Start Alex Smith
Fire MIke Nolan
GEt rid of JT O Sullivan

Local blackouts please so I can see better SHIT on my TV. I'm sick of 49ers/Raiders in my region!

Let start with one thing. JTO is not the answer, but neither is Alex Smith. The bottom line is that the 49ers only option is to play the least terrible QB. Alex Smith can't feel pressure, can't read a defense, can't lead a receiver, can't even hit an open receiver, can't play decently for an entire game (or even an entire half of a game), can't thrown for 300 yards in a game and can't lead a team. The only thing Alex Smith is would be a total wuss. Smith and Manning had the exact same injury last year (grade 3 shoulder seperation). Eli Manning came back after 3 games and lead his team to a Super Bowl victory everyone said they would loose. Smith came back after 3 games and sucked so he blamed his inability to be even a mediocre QB on his injury. I agree that Nolan should be fired after this year because he is a horrific game day coach and the 49ers have at best 6 wins in them this year, but Alex Smith should be out the door with Nolan.

Could you be more of a Smith fanboy? Smith's problem is that he is both inaccurate and has poor field vision, which just happens to be the two most important aspects of playing QB in the NFL. When you think of Montana/Young, you think about great field vision and incredible accuracy.

J.T. earned the starting spot because he was, by far, the best QB on the roster. Above all else, he is far more accurate and has at least marginal field vision, which puts him light-years ahead of Smith. Also, I believe it took a few years for Young to get his shot with us and he was a reject from one of the league's worst franchises at the time (he couldn't even make Tampa Bay's roster....how horrible was that?).

Sorry, but this column smacks of a whiner who spent one too many years hoping Smith would be our golden boy. You can make all the excuses you want, but Smith failed to EVER put together ONE great game. At best, he had a couple of decent drives over a 3 year period and he consistently under or over-threw his receivers over that span (do you blame the O-line, OC and/or system for missing open receivers too?).

Perhaps it would be unfair to judge Smith on his win/loss record, but I don't think that’s how rational people judge him; rather, they judge his performance (or lack thereof).

Remember this post at the end of the year, because we WILL win at least 8 games and our offense WILL be among the top 10 by season's end.
