Don't give up on Smith

I totally agree with everything you wrote in your article.Alex has made strides at qb this year and has been up and down.He has shown signs of greatness look at some of the games he just needs to put it all together and with more time it might . go niners

Your last sentence pretty much summed up what has been driving me nuts about Alex Smith, "...a real second chance to compete with Rodgers." Are you serious? What happened to all the starts he has made and can't end up with a WIN at the end of the day? How many chances do you give a guy?
I can't believe people still continue to make excuses for Alex Smith! Have you been watching the games he has played in this year? He does not have what it takes to be a franchise QB in the NFL. I cringe when I see him throw the ball and I wonder how the scouts at the time didn't see this! He looks really, really bad.
Alex Smith HAS received a 2nd chance, a third, etc.- we had a chance to be in the playoffs! All he had to do was beat Seattle - a lousy team that Shaun Hill managed to beat earlier this year. Nope...Alex Smith blew it. He blew another opportunity the week after with the Eagles. With a win he managed to get last week against the Lions, can you honestly say Alex Smith played a great game against a HORRIBLE team overall!? If the Lions had started Culpepper, I believe they would have won that game too!
Remember the outcome earlier this season when Alex Smith played against Aaron Rodgers? Who won? Yep...Rodgers! So how is that for giving Alex Smith "a real second chance"? He blew that chance!
Alex Smith just isn't good enough. Why can't people see this? STOP making excuses for the guy, although some are valid (i.e., different OC each year), they still don't excuse his poor performance overall with the time he has had to prove us wrong. Well, unfortunately, it seems we are right...he isn't a very good QB in the NFL.

I agree with the premise that Alex has been dealt a bad hand, with a new offensive coordinator each year, and not surrounding him with a good line. He has some play makers now but the line is still horrible. With seven turnovers from Arizona we can only get 24 points? Detroit with the worst defense in the league, he should have had a 300 yard game easy, just light it up. Yea they win but he doesnít pass the eye ball test, he wins and it doesnít look very good. He lacks consistency.
Smith is just ok, but compared to the other playoff QBís there is a huge drop off. Still I donít use any of the 2 first round picks on a QB next year. I would definitely bring in a Veteran as his backup. Put it this way, he is the best the niners have for now. As for the comparisons to Rogers, thatís kind of unfair. Rogers got several years to learn from a hall of famer, and Smith lost his confidence getting thrown into the fire on a bad team.

I agree with Clovis, 49er fan. Alex Smith is a loser, plain and simple, no excuses. Did you see Rookie, Mark Sanchez today??? As a CAL grad that pick was and still haunts the 49ers. Rodgers was the one to pick. We would have won so many more games. That #1 pick is killing the 49ers.
