Packers GM Thompson on free agency, 'It's not fantasy football'

Full story: PackerChatters

Green Bay - Packers general manager Ted Thompson understands that a few among the green-and-gold faithful might look at the headline-grabbing moves other teams have made and be a little envious.

I'm hoping that GM Thompson, having a fistful of dollars, doesn't hang onto all of them, as their are FA's out there who can definitely help the Pack NOW...whereas the draftees usually take 3-4 years to mature and reach their potential...we need a combo of both; given our needs....especially if we have any hope of luring #4 back for a farewell season...other teams (and most in our division) seem to understand this and are acting accordingly. The one signee is a positive, but there are other minefields out there...i.e, O line, and a disgruntled WR that may need to be replaced, linebackers, and overall depth....so hopefully Ted won't be paralyzed by inactivity too long

No Ted it's not Fantasy football but do something for God's sake. Stop bringing in these marginal players and get a playmaker. Teams are making these moves to try and win.

I agree with being smart with the money, but don't watch our competitors out sign us. The Vikings are signing football players. The Pack should too.

Sign another linebacker and draft AJ Hawke, that'd set our LB corps for several years to come. Get a DT to stop the run and let Grady'a expanding waistline go. Trade Javon if he'll be a distraction (guy has ONE good year and thinks he's top shelf!). Innactivity on a poor team with money to invest in the team is lethal. C'mon!!

Ted Thompson is going to be the most hated man in Wisconsin history for taking the Packers down and out. He is hiring second rate players at second rate salaries. He hates free agency and spending money on proven players. Watch this guy trade the Packers #1 draft choice away for two draft choices - probably low first round and a second round. After this year, TT will be gone after the damage is done.

So far Ted T. doesn't look so bright! But I am willing to wait and see what the final results are after the dust settles. Hopefully that will include a very competitive team with #4 on it. If not ... it may take the Packers another thirty years to get back to the SB.

EVERYTHING Ted Thompson has done so far has been a mistake. Not signing any big name free agents is just another one!!!

TT should really consider another job. Perhaps hiring burgerflippers at McDonalds is a better fit.

I suspect any of you commenting on TT being horrible would not more than 1 year to turn a Franchise on the decline around....I am not saying him being inactive in free agency does not concern me but remember what kind of team the Pats built through the draft....give the guy a chance to be earn the title "stupid". So far he seemed to be right on both Aman Green adn Javon.....

Bob Harlen hired Ted and that's good enough for me. With the recent signings as of 3-15, maybe he will step up his efforts to sign Smith from the 49ers, which will allow him to go after A.J.Hawke in the draft. See what it is going to take to keep Javon and William Henderson. The O-Line did come together late last year maybe some tweaking there, but if Brett retires (shudder) Aaron is NOT going to help this team this year.

DOUG I THINK SMITH SIGNED WITH THE 49ERS, BUT I THINK WE LL GET A.J. HAAWK IN THE DRAFT ( WE LOST MARIO WILLIAMS THANKS TO MINN.. AND N.O.) IF WE CAN SIGN THAT BIG GUARD FROM ARIZONA IF HES GOING TO SIGN HERE AND MAYBE KEVIN BERRY AT THE OTHER GUASRD AND WE FIND A CENTER A O0LINE WILL BE HELL OF ALOT BETTER THAN LAST YEAR ANYTHOUGHTS

Where is the Reggie White in this free agent class. Should he just aimlessly spend money to get average players. Then suffer the ramifications of being salry cap strapped while stuck with a bunch of average players with large salries. Lets face it the guy has more knowledge in his little finger than any of you have combined.

I am not sure quite yet that Mario Williams will not be available still when the Packers Pick. They have two pretty good young defensive ends in Charles Grant & Will Smith. They also draftedd the tackle out of Oklahoma last year but wouldn't be surprised if they went with Ferguson with their pick.
