Childress says 'Well, if you're kicking it through, there's 10 guys running down who don't have to do much work.'

He should have said 'Well, if you're kicking it through, there's 10 guys running down who don't have to do much work - who normally didn't cover the kicks all that well anyway.'

So Childress doesn't have a problem having 2 kickers a punter and a long snapper taking up 4 roster spots and I'm guessing here 5-6 million dollars. This is more important than signing a free agent CB, OT, or QB Anderson or the Viking players like Edwards or Kennedy. This is why Childress needs too be fired he's a fucking idiot. If a kicker can't do both cut them and draft one who can if your long snapper can't at least make it as a blocking TE then cut him and git one who can. I'm tired of the Vikings cutting good football players so they can use up roster spots for somebody who might have 6 plays a game or over the hill garbage. IF the Vikings are having trouble with kickoff coverage then replace these TE's, LS, LB's, and S with players who can do more than 1 thing.

Lloyd will change the special teams for the Vikes. He single handedly took the Panthers from dead last in the league to 6th and their coverage is waaaay worse than ours. This was a great move in my opinion.

Hey, at least they're addressing special teams. Lame kickoffs was an issue.

That's just a dumb post all the way around. Are you even trying?

Rhys became available. He's cheap, he great at what he does, and he addresses a need the Vikings had to take care of.

Now -- name one UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT CB, OT, or QB that was available for the Vikings before they lost Taylor and Hicks?

Next -- Anderson? Are you kidding me? The guy who couldn't beat out BRADY QUINN??? Man, you're nuts.

Last -- Edwards? What's the issue there? He IS under contract. And Kennedy? Do you see anyone offering him a contract? Nope. Know why? He's on his 23rd team now. He just isn't that good. And while he looked good in 2009, he's already established a reputation that isn't going to help him in the open market. If the Vikes want to keep him (and I'm sure they do), they'll let him see that no one else cares first, so they can (very wisely) sign him to for FAIR market value.

Forgot one more thing --

Childress is the coach, not the GM. So while I'm sure his input is important to the people in the front office, you can bet he's not the one offering contracts and signing paychecks.

So get over your bad self.

This will probably extend Longwell's career. As long as none of his kicks are ever blocked, he will never be hit or have to try to make a tackle again. 2 less spots a "long snapper only" and a "kick off only" kicker will get really tough on the final cuts. At least they did not waste a draft pick on it.

That's kind of a bummer, actually. I'll miss those classic Longwell air-tackles!

Hey reality checker a couple of corrections carry 1 kicker cut Longwell then Lloyd and a 6th round pick fight it out. years ago the Vikings had a QB named Gary Cauzeo or something like that who nobody could figure out why he was a Viking until it was discovered that he was dating Bud Grant's daughter. Evidently Childress or GM has some daughters. Every KR knows if you git too Longwell run directly at him and he will somehow avoid touching them. Loefler has anybody ever seen him within 10 yards of a PR evidently another daughter. The Vikings could not sign a free agent till they lost one and how about CB Robinson who signed with Atlanta. Edwards is a restricted free agent, Kennedy played very well last year shouldn't that matter more than how he played as a rookie name 6 of those 23 teams he played on QB Anderson had an all pro season in 2007 the fact that Clevland has one of the worst organizations in the NFL might be why he was replaced by Quinn.

I think if it were that easy to square up the kicking game, it would have been done years ago.

Longwell is among the most accurate FG kickers in the league, but can't kick it into the endzone.

Lloyd has the leg to hit the backside of the endzone, but lacks the accuracy to hit the broadside of a barn.

Neither one of these guys can do what the other does, and that's why they're both here now.

As for drafting a rookie... I think you're underestimating how rare it is to find a great all-around kicker in the draft. The Raiders spent a first round pick on Janikowski, and he still struggled for a while. Besides that, I think a veteran like Longwell offers something no rookie can -- the experience to tune out the noise, and hit a clutch kick in the final seconds.

Flash back to the NFC Championship game. Had the Vikings not turned the ball over in OT, Longwell would have attempted the game winner. At that moment, would you really have felt comfortable with Lloyd's accuracy or a rookie's nerves?
