<quoted text>I remember a guy named Montana that didn't have a rocket arm like Elway or Marino. He would throw the short slant and crossing patterns to a guy mamed "RICE"
and Rice would do the rest. He also had roger craig and a few other decent receivers. If you know anything about football you would have heard the words of one of the best coaches ever Bill Walsh
Typically out routes need to be frozen ropes, whereas slants are really about timing and taking a little bit off the ball. You'll see even NFL QBs struggle with the slant because they put too much velocity on the ball (See Michael Vick).
The BEST slant throwing team of all time was the 49ers with both Montana and Steve Young. Both threw a very soft slant pass and did not lead the receivers much. Instead they put the ball right on their numbers.
Bottom line: The slant is tricky to both throw and catch; when you increase a football's velocity you make it harder to catch, because the increased velocity reduces the margin for error too much to make the pass effective. Bill Walsh on throwing "Catchable balls"
Good reply, Butch, but good luck with it. I've tried making it before (also using Montana as the quintessential example), but, unfortunately, you're not likely to get too far with it. For whatever reason, it seems some fans can't grasp the concept that there are different ways to win and get the job done. Different players with different skill sets obviously require different kinds of systems to succeed, and Walsh had the perfect system for guys like Montana and Young and the players to make it work.

I'll be most happy if the beginning of the "Henne era" is delayed by a few more wins with Pennington. The optimal situation is for Henne to learn in "garbage time" for a little while.

BTW, guys, if you want a good laugh, go to the "Interviews" section of the WQAM home page ( wqam.com ), scroll down the list, and click on the Sal Palantonio interview with Orlando. Sal makes some statements about Pennington and the Dolphins that in retrospect induce a good chuckle and make him look like an idiot. I wonder if he'll come on again and admit his mistake. Check it out.
