Sugar Bowl: Talent pool runs deep at tailback | BuckeyeXtra

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

The running back job at Ohio State dissolved into a largely one-man show for the last half of the season, but practices for the Sugar Bowl the past two weeks have shed new light on an old premise.

I'm not sure about this crop of backs. Berry and Hall or little guys and we haven't seen much in the way of consistency out of either of them. Granted, they haven't seen many carries either, but they aren't the kind of backs who can take a lot of contact.

Herron should head to the NFL even though he'll be a third round pick at best. He's also deceptively small and I don't think he has the speed to convince NFL scouts to overlook his size.

I know Buckeye fans are going to insist that he's fast and has proven himself to be a strong runner. Fine. But that's college ball. Herron is about 5'10 and weighs 190 pounds or so. We'll get official numbers at the combine but that's the size of an NFL corner and if a team is going to take a chance on a running back with those dimensions he needs to have the skills of Marshall Faulk.

Boom will not be wise to leave early for the NFL he is a good back in college but not an NFL back.Just look at beanie Wells bigger, faster, stronger and a average NFL back. But is is nice to have all those talented runners......GO BUCKS

It's great to have a talent pool like this one. Meanwhile football elsewhere moves into passing and spread offenses and OSU coaches sleep. I hope Tressel doesn't exit like Woody Hayes did.

I think you'll see Tressel retire soon. Perhaps he'll stick around until Gene Smith's contract runs out and then transition over to the Athletic Director position. Maybe he's got his eyes on a college presidency. There was a push to nominate him as the president of YSU a couple of years ago. It was ridiculous but what about BW?

I hope that he leaves the OSU fold completely. His loyalty to mediocre assistants makes me worry about how he would handle the search for his replacement.

Regardless of how it goes, Tressel won't leave in disgrace after socking somebody on national TV, but I wouldn't be surprised if somebody opens a hall closet and gets buried by skeletons after he's gone.

I almost never say this, but I think Boom would be wise to go to the NFL after this great year he's had. I can't see his stock improving if he stays another year and it might decrease.

Yeah, that Jim Tressell. What a loser. He's only been the most successful coach in the nation in the last 10 years. We at Ohio State expect more than that.

First of all Dean, "none is expected" is corrent English. It is not "none are expected."
Secondly, Boom is crazy if he goes pro. He would be a fourth to fifth-round pick at best and not a lock to make a roster. So unless he wants to come back and stand on the sideline next year in street clothes, when he could be the starting tailback, he should stay put, work hard, get his degree, continue to learn proper English (unlike Dean) and have another 1,000-yard season.

I agree. You've got to strike when the iron is hot, and he's on a hot streak at the moment.

OK I just read something funny on USAToday's comments "Buckeyes just say your dads negotiated the tattoo deal and the NCAA will rule you ineligible for 24hrs but eligible in time for Sugar Bowl" hahahahahahaha

Thats the story and we're sticking to it. They were dragged and blind folded by their dads for tattoos hahahaha

You must be living under a rock down there in Houston my friend. The spread is all about RUNNING the football while spreading the defense out amd making them defend in space. You look at the good teams and whether they are running the spread, option, I- formation, pro set, west coast or any other type of offense; good teams RUN the football successfully. What's changed is that these days many teams throw the ball first to set up the run versus the other way around. Oregon and Auburn are both run first teams.

How many of these tailbacks will be suspended for getting free tatoos? Gosh, I thought OSU ran a completely clean program? All the major programs cheat. It is the nature of the beast! GO GATORS! GO SEC!

Tressell is good at beating inferior teams but when he plays a team that is equal or has more talent he CHOKES! His fault is he plays not to lose instead of playing to win! This will be the reason why OSU loses to Arkansas. Arkansas has nothing to lose. OSU has everything to lose. Getting beat by Arkansas will be a complete disgrace to the OSU football program and again show the nation that OSU football is over-rated! After another Bowl Collapse I am sure OSU fan will be wanting to fire the Sweater Vest Guy!

Just two days ago I wrote how nice it was not to hear about Buckeyes in the news because that meant they were staying out of trouble and scandals. Spoke too soon apparently.

How disappointing to hear about this tattoos for memorabilia thing on many levels. It's bad enough they broke the NCAA rules, which is just dumb a s s to begin with. Now we have the distraction that we didn't need and that the media thrives upon. Then the fact it was about tattoos that make them look like stupid thugs and show no class at all. What a bunch of morons. Higher education indeed. May as well be a michigan fan if this is the kind of dumb a s s that represents OSU. Hope it is only a couple of players.

Wrong. "None are expected" is correct. You failed. It's always funny to see an amateur correcting somebody else when they are themselves wrong. Besides, it's irrelevant. These are OSU football players and fans we are talking about so if you're looking for correct language usage you're in the wrong place.

I disagree, Tressel does not choke! Conference winners from Conference USA, ACC, Big Ten, Big East, MAC all have their troubles going up against the power teams.

OSU plays some MAC schools and one traditional national power plus Indiana, Iowa, Northwestern, Minnesota, Purdue, Illinois etc. ect... In the 12 years of the BCS no other Big Ten team is in contention for the title, except when OSU and UM were extremely over rated in 2006.

You can't play such a weak schedule then beat a good team. Tressel should be given credit for doing that last year with a win over Oregon.

Better get those reserve tailbacks ready 'cause Herron will be riding the bench after being suspended next year by the NCAA.

You been eating paint chips again gaytor Coach Tres and the University did nothing wrong here it was a bad mistake made by a bunch of kids. We did not keep players on the team after a failed drug test like they do at florida we have not have 28 or so players arrested like florida has and we have not been put on probation like your gaytors have been in the past. And is it true that billy donovan said he is going stop playing cupcakes from the state of floirda like ju and central because he cant beat them.
