Are there any real, un-politicized statistics available on how many tragic accidents like this happen, vs how many robberies/killings are prevented because someone has a gun in the home? How many intruders are armed by the gun a person had in his/her house for self protection?

I am a weapons nut. No explanation, just am. I love shooting and the zen of aiming, exhaling and squeezing the trigger s l o w l y. I like the quick snap-look-shoot of skeet. I think ballistae and MIGs and boot daggers are neat. I've made chainmail and bought high-quality swords as gifts for friends. So, I really understand the desire to own a hand gun and the pleasure of cleaning it and balancing the wieght of it in one's hand.

I have a kid. There is no gun in my house.

Aren't you supposed to check the gun for bullets before you clean it??? I know it said, he forgot there was a round in it.. I've heard this same storyline, time and time again over many years.. Jeepers.. Checking for bullets should be the very first thing you would do!!! Seems like a pure common sense thing to do..:(

The first rule of firearms is that they're always loaded. The father made a deadly assumption that this firearm wasn't loaded. That's a sad, preventable, outcome.

If you own guns, know how they work, take good care of them, and always treat them as if they're loaded.

There are non-political statistics, but you won't read them in political (i.e. left-wing) newspapers.

Notice how this story from Michigan is being distributed nation wide, whereas a person using a gun to defend himself wouldn't make it into the papers in the next county.

Loaded or not, the barrel of a firearm is NEVER pointed in the direction of anyone...unless there is intent to fire. Very sad story, it's a simple accident to prevent.

To get to this story you had to click on the national section and then look in the AP press news wire section.

P.S. Are you actually in CA?

Gun ownership needs no defense, just the same as incompetent gun handling has no defense.

First the headline should read "Killed by Father" not "Killed By Gun".

Second, learn the difference between an "accident" and "negligence".

The basic rules of firearm safety apply ALWAYS.

If you own a firearm and don't know how to handle it safely around innocent people you are WRONG.

How many innocent children are killed in vehicle accidents or any other accident for that matter? The father was very stupid in this case no doubt. I have a hard time believing this still happens. But to make it a gun issue is wrong. People unfortunately die everyday from avoidable accidents that do not involve guns. I think the responsibility of owning and carrying a weapon has increased over the years. Lord knows that when ever an accident happens it becomes national news. It's not like we don't here about it.

You are correct - the very first thing you would do is make sure that the firearm is unloaded. After you are 100% sure the firearm is unloaded you still treat it as though it IS 100% loaded.

Right, you must read them on nra.org

What person?

And you gun nuts need to take a sedative and relax. Nobody wants to take your guns. I own guns, and I don't clutch them like some desperate attempt at reliving the Reagan administration.

Police kill aspiring Miami-Dade rapper after stand-off

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/southflorida/...

A self-proclaimed music artist was shot and killed by police Monday evening after he refused to leave his attic and pulled out a weapon when police attempted to arrest him, according to officials.

Anthony Levy, 30, was wanted by Miami-Dade police for premeditated attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was also wanted by Miami-Dade School Board police for aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm on school property.

Miami-Dade police said investigators attempted to apprehend Levy at a Miami Gardens home Monday afternoon, but Levy would not leave the house.

Investigators then called in the police Special Response Team, which used chemical agents to try to force Levy to walk out of the home at 301 NW 192nd St., police said.

That didn't work either, officials said.

When the police team entered, they found Levy barricaded in the attic with a weapon, so they shot him, according to police.

Next-door neighbor Bettye-Anne Tzib said police were at the peach house on the corner when she got home before 3 p.m. Monday.

Undercover and K-9 officers were going in and out of the house, she said.

She left to run an errand, and when she came back about 4:45 p.m., more police were there, along with the special response team. She had to wait at a neighbor's house for a few hours and then was only allowed to go back into her house through the back door, she said.

A group of men moved into the home a few months ago and said they had a recording studio there.

Levy had two children, ages 7 and 1, said his mother, Marie Ascencio.

''He's a rapper, but he's not a bad boy the way they say,'' she said. Her son didn't carry a weapon, she said.

Family members told Miami Herald news partner WFOR-CBS 4 that Levy was an aspiring rap artist who went by the name ''Dollar Bill'' and that he was trying to turn his life around. They told CBS 4 that Levy was at home doing a recording session and that police did not have to use deadly force.

Levy had previous arrests in Miami-Dade, including a 2000 conviction for fleeing and eluding and aggravated assault on a police officer or firefighter.

John Rivera, the president of Miami-Dade's police union, which is representing two of the officers involved, said the officers feared for their lives.

''These bad guys need to understand they need to comply,'' he said.``They can't be making threatening moves toward police officers.''
