Police kill aspiring Miami-Dade rapper after stand-off http://www.miamiherald.com/news/southflorida/...
A self-proclaimed music artist was shot and killed by police Monday evening after he refused to leave his attic and pulled out a weapon when police attempted to arrest him, according to officials.
Anthony Levy, 30, was wanted by Miami-Dade police for premeditated attempted murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was also wanted by Miami-Dade School Board police for aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm on school property.
Miami-Dade police said investigators attempted to apprehend Levy at a Miami Gardens home Monday afternoon, but Levy would not leave the house.
Investigators then called in the police Special Response Team, which used chemical agents to try to force Levy to walk out of the home at 301 NW 192nd St., police said.
That didn't work either, officials said.
When the police team entered, they found Levy barricaded in the attic with a weapon, so they shot him, according to police.
Next-door neighbor Bettye-Anne Tzib said police were at the peach house on the corner when she got home before 3 p.m. Monday.
Undercover and K-9 officers were going in and out of the house, she said.
She left to run an errand, and when she came back about 4:45 p.m., more police were there, along with the special response team. She had to wait at a neighbor's house for a few hours and then was only allowed to go back into her house through the back door, she said.
A group of men moved into the home a few months ago and said they had a recording studio there.
Levy had two children, ages 7 and 1, said his mother, Marie Ascencio.
''He's a rapper, but he's not a bad boy the way they say,'' she said. Her son didn't carry a weapon, she said.
Family members told Miami Herald news partner WFOR-CBS 4 that Levy was an aspiring rap artist who went by the name ''Dollar Bill'' and that he was trying to turn his life around. They told CBS 4 that Levy was at home doing a recording session and that police did not have to use deadly force.
Levy had previous arrests in Miami-Dade, including a 2000 conviction for fleeing and eluding and aggravated assault on a police officer or firefighter.
John Rivera, the president of Miami-Dade's police union, which is representing two of the officers involved, said the officers feared for their lives.
''These bad guys need to understand they need to comply,'' he said.``They can't be making threatening moves toward police officers.''
