Thanks for nothing, boss. Lovie Smith would never say so, but you had to wonder if that's what he thought over the weekend hearing general manager Jerry Angelo's plans to tweak rather than transform the Bears ' ...

"The thermostat in the head coach's office just went up a few degrees. With two years and $9 million remaining on his contract after next season, Smith still seems safe in his job unless '09 turns into a disaster."

And David, that is what KILLS me!!! Job security, even though the product and performance have been mediocre, bordering on horse****. Bear fans deserve better.

Kind of makes you wonder which team Angelo's been following the last couple years doesn't it.

This statement is a CYA. How can he say he has done his job? How many draft picks are not on the roster? Who is a pro bowl QB, WR, DB? This guy is the problem not Lovie!

Okay great so Angelo is going to scapegoat Lovie for his years of ineptitude.

Let's not forget the Bears are a couple seasons removed from the Super Bowl with Grossman of all people as the QB.

Lovie wins when he has the players. Angelo addressed receiver with Brandon Lloyd and 90 year old Marty Booker. So now Lovie should be on the hot seat? What a crock.

Who was the last serious impact player the Bears signed on the free agent market?

The Bears are 30 million under the cap, Angelo is sitting on the purse strings and doing nothing of substance, but I'm supposed to believe Lovie needs to go?

How many #4 overall draft choices has Lovie blown? Lovie coaches the players Angelo signs and drafts. Lovie can prove he can coach (see the Super Bowl season). Angelo cannot draft well in the first round and does not sign impact players in free agency.

Tell Angelo to look in the mirror when he criticizes.

Angelo has got to be saying what he's told. His statements have ownership written all over them.

Haugh states in the article $30 million under the cap. What if we had 3 $5 million players on each side of the ball last year? We'd have made the post season for sure and be front running for the division, currently.

Angelo is covering his behind. He drafted these players gave contracts out.etc.Be a man and stand up and be counted.Punks at the top that's one reason the Bears have not been successful.

Somebody tell the Ricketts family to buy this team. The team needs big market owners, not skin flints. David Haugh, btw, is one of the few regular beat reporters I enjoy reading.

This is called passing the buck. JA knows this team is lacking and is deflecting the blame to Lovie Dovie in a preemptive move. This may buy Angelo a year or two...

Why weren't we reading this column at this time in 2008? Failing to make the playoffs the year after getting this team to the Super Bowl? The only time we should seen this farce of a head coach on TV this past season should have been on "I Love New York 2."

Let me be VERY clear. If Lovie continues to coach this team the way I manage this team, I will have no choice but to fire him. Gross incompetence will not be tolerated anymore (at least for coaches).

Who cares? It's the Bears. The organization makes Jack Benny look like a spendthrift.

I'm not a big fan of Lovie's but it's not all his fault that Angelo likes to trade down to get several meidocre players to make a meidocre team, instead of staying high and always taking the best player available, thereby constantly building. So, the Vikings and such will aggressively pursue better and better players, we stay where we are, mired in medicority.

Everyone needs to calm down...I'm bringing Willie Gualt and Dennis Gentry out of retirement. I will also get Fencik and Dent back. Luckman is a little old so I'll see if Erik Kramer wants to come back. I guarantee you we will win 7 games this year. So all you ungrateful fans put that in your pipe and smoke it.

That's Oke-Doke by me, Jerry, as long as you get the ax, too. Can you say, "Would you like fries with that order?"
