This means nothing. Winfield has another year left on his contract and it would be wise for the Vikings to wait it out and sse how he plays this year. He's a great player, but he is getting up there in 'player years'. I hope they sign him, but no need to make this a story. Just get out on the field and prove something. All of the Vikings have something to prove this year!

Besides, he's going make 6 mil this season. If he's wanting more money, then maybe the Vikings should shop that postion next year. Thats top pay for a good, young CB. I still don't want to see him go tho..

we should sign antoine. we would have probably been 8-8 without him last year.

No stadium, no NFL franchise!
The Wilf's will keep it quiet until the end of the year...keeping the seats full. At that point, they will buy out the lease, move to LA and play in the Rose Bowl until their new home is built.

I agree with you 100% that they're moving, but I didn't think it would be any earlier than after the 2010 season. The Vikings brass have tried and tried for over a decade now to get a stadium done, and to no avail. I'll still love them in L.A.

9 mil a year is to much. Hate to see him go, but at that price for an old CB?

There is ZERO chance any of these guys will supplant Winfield as a starter (this season).... C'mon!

Winfeild is the best corner in the NFC North, and one of the top 5 in the league. If you are an intelligent organization, you pay him and retain his services.

I agree. In fact, there's probably more than a few of us that do. Unfortunately, his agent is one of 'em. More than likely, his agent and the front office pukes are just playing patty cake on the subject. It'll straighten out at some point...

Winfield has scored at least 4 TD's for the Vikings. 2 last year (blocked kick and fumble) and two off interceptions (2006,2007).

In addition to that, he's kept opponants from scoring more than a few too.

32 is ancient for multi-million extension and no staduim in sight. The Wilf's are playing it safe with the checkbook. Winfield is a great tackler and he should be moved to safety. There he can move into the box more easily and blitz more. His coverage skills and lack of heighth and speed make him vulnerable to fast and tall wide outs. The Queen's will need to draft a corner high next year. Winfield will even with his weaknesses be hard to replace.

are you drinking that Gin? Seriously our other cbs are jokes with long term contracts. They are all kickoff coverage guys at best, a bunch of over paid Vinny Ciurcu's. sing him for a 4 year deal already.

To me, this is a bigger story than the entire Brett Favre fiasco.

First, Chilly lets Birk walk away and replaces him with an unknown commodity. Now, he's treating our best DB with the same approach. If Sullivan can't fill the center position at least adequately this season, our offense is in big trouble. Now, our defense could be in big trouble after '09 because once again, Childress believes Winfield can be replaced with.....someone.

We'll see how things work out this year without Birk. But if we end up missing the playoffs because of lousy play at the center position, Childress should be fired and frog-marched out the door.

What if Winfield has another pro-bowl caliber season this year? My guess is it won't make a bit of difference.

They almost certainly HAVE to sign Winfeild to another contract. he's the best corner in the NFC north... we certainly don't need to play against him if he went to the Boars or the Pukers.

With the new rules of bumping on the line and sophisticated defensive schemes the days of the true "cover corner", a la Deion Sanders and such, are over. Physical play is now the new thing. Winfield is awesome in that role. Still, as the old cover corners used to rely on their speed the new corners rely on hard hitting to excel, which shortens their careers. As much as I like him Winfield's best days are behind him. A 1 or 2 year contract for decent money should do it. By then the Vikes will have a replacement.

Daily Horoscope for January 6

Scorpio

Don't let yourself be caught up in a crowd mentality. Just because someone else makes a major production out of what should be a simple matter, doesn't necessarily mean that it has to affect you adversely. You might be able to bring down the volume with a tap on the shoulder and a meaningful look. Even though it might not seem like it, your cool head is definitely appreciated at times like this.
