As an Alabama graduate, I couldn't be prouder of our team this year and the effort they are making on the field and in the classroom. I think Coach Bryant would be proud of them too, they have handled themselves with the dignity and class he always believed in.
Coach Saban has unified these young men and is doing a wonderful job this year. I lived in California for 8 years, and now live in Minneapolis, MN. but my blood still flows crimson and white, and I miss Tuscaloosa so much. Our team is something that gives the people of the state pride, and considering everything else there, it needs it. I will say this though, as a Jew and a theatre major there, I never felt out of place, I was for the most part, embraced. I love my school and fraternity and its faculty, teams, theatre department, and spirit. My college experiences were some of the greatest of my life. As for "Saban/Palin" stickers....I'd prefer "Obama/Saban" stickers myself. But thats the great thing about sports, they unite people of all kinds. And as the Bear said-"Its kind of hard to rally around a math class." Roll Tide!

A great article and finely written, but myself and a great many others are extremely tired of liberal media rekindling the fire of the civil rights movement. Those issues are long gone and in no way should make it into a story concerning current day Alabama Football. I was born a raised in Alabama, my whole family is from Alabama, and I'm also an Alabama Alumni and an avid Obama supporter. If us bigot rednecks “down here in the bible belt” can support and help elect the first African American President then maybe were not all so ignorant or racist, and maybe if the media would begin focusing on the outcome instead of the struggle the country could finally come together as a whole. There’s no doubt that the civil rights movement is an extremely important time in the progression of this great nation, a time that will never be forgotten, but the next time you guys decide to write a story about Alabama Football try and focus on the positive, the leadership, the brotherhood, and the tradition, and leave out the hatred, the long gone that no longer defines our state. Thank you.

Great article until the last two lines. As a University of Alabama alumnus, fan, and state resident, I take pride in my team. However, I do not feel that football is necessary to "prop us up" and "make up for (our state's) shortcomings" - real or perceived. All states have shortcomings and competitive advantages. Just stick to reporting sports and leave the narrow minded, backward perceptions to yourself.

Penn State fans had better watch, they need to see who and what they missed out on when they could have hired Saban.

Bama needs to send Jarrett Lee a thank you card for the 4 interceptions. I will only fault Lee with 2 of them, since one was bobbled and the other happened while he was getting hit. But you take away the one he threw right at a Bama defensive back for the instant touchdown, and LSU won the game.

You do have a great coach now with Nick. I hope he does his homework for the SEC championship game, because Florida is much better than LSU right now.

Good Article except the writer shot himself in the face with that State of the Union of Alabama. That was just retarded. Some people kill a good article which could have been golden only to sabotage their own work. BAMA is back and Lsu is only reloading. Lsu gave Alabama all it could handle and BAMA did well. Had Lsu played that way against Georgia and Florida yesterdays game would have been one for the ages.

We certainly had our problems in Alabama in the 60's. We did a lot of things wrong. But we know it now, and we continue to try to make amends for them. But, Mr. Newberry, you would be a better writer if you could acknowledge that we were far from alone. The worst, the bloodiest, race riots in American history took place in 19th century New York City. Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles .... all were the site of shameful episodes. Alabama doesn't have a lot of money, so we rank low in a lot of scales which are based on money. But we have a whole lot of fine people, black and white. We have a way of life based on caring for each other. Our communities are centered around our family, our church and our schools. You aren't nearly as likely to get mugged in Birmingham or Mobile as you are in NYC. Our climate isn't so bad, either. How long has it been since you visited Alabama, Mr. Newberry? Come to see us. You might be surprised

OK if you take the interception away then you can take the BS holding call on Andre in the 4th and the BS fumble over the line in the 1st and we stomped the a$$!
