"Over a century?" Explorers Iberville and Bienville sailed into Louisiana on March 2, 1699, the day before Mardi Gras. The next day, about 60 miles downriver from where New Orleans is today, they made camp. In honor of the holiday, they named the place Point du Mardi Gras, the nearby tributary Bayou Mardi Gras, and the celebration began.
