Soon folks will begin to realize D Sharper is to slow to play safety. Antoine Winfield is also to slow.. In todays football you need so many defensive backs.

Before anyone gets too excited about Jackson, or too depressed about the defense, this was the first PRESEASON game. Teams will not be able to carve up the middle of the defense with running plays once Big Pat gets on the field. Jackson looked good but he threw into coverage on the play that was initially called pass interference on Trufant, but then the call was correctly reversed. He also threw a ball low and outside on the following play. Other than that he looked pretty good.

All of the fumbles, except the fumbles by Shiancoe and Hicks were by players who either won't see the field, or won't make the team.

I was disappointed a few weeks ago when Shockey came on the market and was traded elsewhere. I presume, as an NFC contender, that we were not even called about trading him here. Shiancoe was a signing mistake and Minny could greatly benefit from an upgrade at TE. Shiancoe only caught about two dozen balls last year, if that. Last night he gets his big chance and coughs the ball up when he got sandwiched between two defenders.

Berrian looked good, didn't he.

When is this pass defense going to step up? we got outplayed. Pat williams and madieu williams sat out. Whether they play or not we shouldn't have struggled against the pass that badly. If we play like this when the season starts there is no way we will get to the playoffs. The offense is improving, but what good does that do if our pass d is going to struggle again.

I don't know, I realize that Pat plays a big part in breaking down those huge runs I saw, but honestly we got some decent pressure from our front four this game. And by front four, I mean Allen.

The DBs needs to get to the ball faster. Then again, it's just preseason, so whatever. I was just hoping to get a better look at how our defense was going to be this season, and I was shocked at how easily torn apart we were.

Yeah agree and yeah we also got 4 turnovers one by shiancoe. This offense is finally fun to watch, tj is improving, as long as the o-line gives him time I believe tj will hit his targets. The seahawks are lucky peterson didn't get any carries he would of got couple homeruns.

Put things into perspective. No Madieu, no Pat, no AD (running), and if you watched closely, the starters rarely were all in at the same time, having second and third string guys mixed in to get some exposure and for the purpose of grading out. We DO have to determine which guys will be there for the start of the season, and which guys were not. My main dissapointment was the turnovers by such a diverse group of guys, and by the way, none were TJ's fault. How do you think the game would have turned out if Gus had played almost all the rest of the game as Seneca did? I'll bet even with the 5 flubs, the game would have been closer. I'm encouraged.

Aside from the return to mediocrity shown by our D-backs, what most concerned me was the overall lack of intensity by the entire D. Seattle was flying and hitting (proactive). Vikes were listless and sitting back (reactive). A reflection of coaching philosophy?

Wasn't Leslie Frazier fired from his previous job? Maybe its not the players but the coaches. I realize everything was very vanilla and mostly zone defense AND it was the first preseason game. But I expected better from our starting defense. Go Vikes!

RUST...I WOULD CALL IT THAT THE VIKINGS SHIP IS LISTING HEAVILY DUE TO BARNACLE BUILDUP ON ITS RUDDER. TO SAY THEY LOOKED RUSTY IS TOO KIND FROM MY PERSPECTIVE. AFTER READING ALL OF THE BALLY HOO BUILD UP IN THE PAPER GOING TO DRAFT DAY AT WINTER PARK, MANKATO CAMP, AND BEING A 20 SOME YEAR SEASON TICKET HOLDER I FOUND THE PERFORMANCE LAST NIGHT EVEN THOUGH PRESEASON TO BE HIGHLY INSULTING. THE LACKLUSTER HO HUM ATTITUDE I WITNESSED BOTH ON THE FIELD AND ON THE BENCH BY COACHES AND PLAYERS TELLS ME THESE GUYS ARE IN BIG TROUBLE AND REALLY BELIEVE ALL THE PURE UNADULTERATED B.S. THAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN ABOUT THEM. TIME TO PUT THE PRESS CLIPPLINGS AWAY AND COME BACK TO THE REAL WORLD BOYS AND GIRLS

The D stunk, but I was at the game and they played a very simple zone coverage the whole game. The rookie safety looked pretty lost and they were weak up the middle in the front. I didn't see the problem as the older dudes (like Sharper or Winfield) being old and slow as much as guys like the rook safety, Griffin and the LB's being out of position. T-Jack faced the same simple D which is why I'm not too excited either way. Schiancoe is still a turd -- so much for his improved training camp.

C'mon Chad, do a little research. No, Frazier was not fired from his last job. He came over to Minnesota from the Colts.

it's great that we have m williams and allen but we need another corner (maybe 2) BIG TIME. why is mcaulley considered to be anything more than a nickel back? with all the brat farve stuff going on i saw the replay of the record breaking touchdown about 783 times and mcaulley was so far out of the play he was barely in the screen. and that's not a fluke! the d will be average at best against the pass again this year.*sigh*

on the upside...jackson looked good. if shiancoe can hold on to the ball the offense should be pretty good. not '98 good but as good as when moon was playing qb.

GO VIKES!!!!

The vikings corners will continue to be bad because they practice against a bad passing offense.

The Vikings. The puzzle is a puzzle. All the pieces seem to be there, but it seems, there is no one that can put the pieces together. Like the Frank Sinatra song, " High Hopes. " Everyone knows and ant can't move a rubber tree plant, but woops, there goes another rubber tree plant."
Strive for the impossible, then all things are possible.

Hasselbeck is as underrated as Favre is overrated. Vikes' starters played Seahawks' starters toe to toe, in spite of the setback of Shiancoe's fumble. Never fear, the Vikes will be fine this year. ce.

it's been a long time since we had good corners or good defence for that matter. I don't see any differense with what ever player they bring up here unless the coaches are willing to change their philosophy difensively. How many times have we seen oponents' receivers got wide open and our DBs got burnt by them. many, many times.
I don't see any changes come this year guys.

Hmm that was scary to watch....

I know that the Williams Pat and Madieu weren't playing, but nevertheless.. that was like... watching butter getting sliced by a Ginsu knife.
This is the kind of D I usually notice the Vikings employ once we have a lead - a soft, pillowy pass defense based mostly in zone and damn-near prevent where its basically throw and catch from the other team and our corners give them 5 to 10 yards of cushion in which to do it with.
But hey. Its just first game of preseason. And it was* a beautiful thing to see Jared Allen pass rush - the fastest big white man I ever seen in a football uniform!

Yeah, it's only preseason, but this team needs a ton of work. Sure the pass defense was abysmal, but the guys on offense played like the ball had a rattlesnake on it. TJack looked pretty good and Berrian did a nice job, but he looked wobbly on both RACs. He should have scored on the reception down the left sideline. This team just seems snakebitten as another key player is lost for the season in the first preseason game. Sorry to see Heath go down.
