Why the Oakland Raiders Should Run a 3-4 Defense in 2013

Feb 10, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: BleacherReport

The Oakland Raiders seemed to take only a passing interest in defense in 2012-2013. Operating out of a 4-3 base defense, they allowed 27.7 points per game, ranking 27th out of 32 teams, according to NFL .com. Such an underwhelming performance necessarily results from poor effort, but poor scheming can play a critical role.

I would be shocked if we switched to the 3-4 this off season. We just don't have the personnel for it. There are some things you can do, and take advantage of in the 3-4, but typically the 3-4 isn't very effective unless you have Pro Bowl caliber defenders at EACH LEVEL of the defense, and the 3-4 just allows them more movement.

We do not have those types of players. No NT(most important position in 3-4), no secondary players, though if we re-sign Wheeler we will have decent OLB's.

I don't know if Star Lotulelei is capable of playing a NT or not, but if so, then I can see us switching. I think our main agenda is to get difference makers and you are sure to get one at #3 overall. If somebody within the top 10 offered us a second round pick to trade down, I'd probably do it. There are a lot of good pass rushers with first round value and I'm sure we're bound to land one within the top 10.

I don't think our current personnel is capable of the 3-4. We have too many needs in my opinion and not enough cap space to address them and overhaul personnel to change the scheme

Shaughnessy and Houston could be 3-4 ends...Wheeler and Burris could be ILBs in the 3-4, so that would lead us to needing a NT and two good 3-4 OLBs. I'm sure we could find the OLBs in this draft, but the NT may be harder to come across plus we have issues on the OL and in the secondary. The up side is that since we could be losing Kelly and Seymour one DT would be easier to get than two, but that also means having to get more LBs and that is a position we've been quite notorious for not having enough depth at.

Ya, we would need a big ol' hoss. Ala Busari Raji of the packers or Vince Wilfork of the Pats, Casey Hampton of the Steelers. Big, fat, strong, athletic guys with surprising movement skills that forces a double team from the offensive line EACH PLAY. While allows one of the backers to run free.

That's the 3-4 in a nutshell.

I'll tell you one guy from Texas I didn't want was Michael Huff.

The Texas schools are the ones I'm most familiar with so I normally have more confidence in players from those schools. I also follow Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, and California fairly closely, but I don't follow any college as close as I follow the Raiders.
