Tom Powers: It's time to punch the Vikings' reset button and plan for next season

There are 69 comments on the TwinCities.com story from Nov 20, 2010, titled Tom Powers: It's time to punch the Vikings' reset button and plan for next season. In it, TwinCities.com reports that:

It was the ultimate embarrassment in what has been a mortifying, tawdry season. Now it has come to this: players flinging their helmets after coming off the field; Brett Favre and Darrell Bevell squabbling in plain sight; teammates screaming at each other on the sideline; and accusatory fingers being pointing everywhere.

Brett Farve might use the team's collapse and his injuries as an excuse to retire now after the NFL announced Friday that the league's technology consultants are conducting a forensic examination of Jenn Sterger's cell phone in addition to reviewing phone records and other documentary evidence that she gave to the NFL's security officials. Farve admits sending Sterger text messages but told NFL Commish Roger Goodell that he didn't send her the risky business starkers photos alleged by deadspin.com , and if Farve fears that the forensic exam will prove that he lied to Goodell he may decide to retire immediately---which will likely stop the league's investigation and save him the humiliation of being suspended without pay and being branded a liar. Farve may want to avoid any more damage to his personal reputation, spare his family additonal heartache, and prevent his commercial endorsement partners from dumping him. And of course, Farve may decide to ride out the season if he's confident that the forensic cell phone exam will confirm that he told the truth and didn't send the bad boy pics to Sterger.

Don't see what you mean. 40for60 mumbled all offseason and through the beginning of the season about how good this team was. They were going to cake walk the division, it didn't matter what quarterback they used. Heck many times he rambled on and on about, how good a coach Childress was, and ridiculed anyone who tried to tell him all he was spewing was a purple fantasy, Well welcome back to reality 40for60, Archangel, CTViking,Erievikiefan,Scruffy, Bulldog.

Just another day in loserville, enjoy projecting who your first round pick will be the last weeks of the season.

Funny Dan from Phoenix was right all along.

Nice column, Tom. Thank you. At least you've been on this for weeks. The rest of the columnists have been pussyfooting. You alone spoke truth to power. Now, help the brain trust refocus. And I'm very, very serious here -- not just enraged, but thoughtful.

WE NEED TO TURN THE FOCUS TO ADRIAN PETERSON. Peterson is the most misused talent in the NFL. We need to make him want to stay here. The entire rest of the season should be built around him. Rally the team around getting him the rushing title. Make him want to stay in Minnesota.

Nothing else matters. Forget pride, forget salvaging the season. Build every game plan around AP, make him the rallying point, and make him want to be a Viking. Right now I'm sure he, like everyone else, is looking at the calendar wondering when he can become a free agent. Our single goal this year, whoever is coach, should be to make him want to stay here for his whole career, and that will be done only by putting him front and center of the team's offense for the rest of this season.

I hope you folks hear me and pick up the cry. Childress is toast, Favre is toast, the season is toast. Forget all of them. Think AP and don't let anyone off the hook who does not build the rest of this year around him. Let the present become the past. AP is the future and that's where we need to look and build. My own proposal is to replace the FIRE CHILDRESS chants with RUN AP chants. It's time to turn the page.

What the hell did we expect? The guy is 41, skipped training camp (at least his high school receivers were just as talented as the group we gave him to start this year), our biggest weapon doesn't even make the field for third down plays .... and don't get me started on the under-achieving Jared Allen. Zyg-meister better be on the phone right now with Cowher or Dungy!

A well written and thought out post. You nailed it. They don't want to face reality, being a fan must make you toe the company line.

Well, you can't blame the refs. I guess it's time to cue all the "your women are fat" and "there's nothing to do in Wisconsin" comments. What a laughable team and sorry excuse of a franchise. Give us until next year and we will ship over a couple more of our rejects. Well...at least you have the Gophers football team!! What bowl are they going to??? Ha Ha Ha...what a joke

1. FIRE Chiily now. Chilly's not a good coach and his time as a pretender has run out. The team and fans have deserted him. 2009 had less to do with Chilly than it did Favre's almost magical effect on the team.
2. BENCH Farve, play TJ (shudder). No more excuses for Favre either - he need to hang it up. Sad to say but Packer fans (thousands of whom I live in the midst of here in Milwaukee) get the last laugh on this one.
3. DRAFT a QB - at least a higher draft pick will be available after this atrocious season. Perhaps the Vikings will find a Sam Bradford in the 2011 draft.

Sorry, my merde-for-brains friend. Purple has historically been a favorite color of royalty and the aristocracy. Green and yellow is just the color of vomit.

If Wilf doesn't fire Childress, he needs his head examined... be a man and admit you made a mistake with this coach by signing an extension and do the right thing. $20 million on a 41 year old QB who didn't want to play, a wasted 3rd round pick, an injured WR who wasn't told to have surgery, and again, 12 men in the huddle. 12 men in the huddle should've been the last straw for Chilly.
