Who's calling the plays?

Full story: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Is there a breakdown in communication? While Dolphins coach Cam Cameron insisted he was calling the plays last Sunday, quarterback John Beck said he was under the impression the plays came directly from the ...

It's obvious Cameron is going to be fired by now. I figured last year, when they hired him, that they would see what he could do for a year, and if his first year was a disaster then they would can him, well he is a disaster totally and completely. He wasn't left anything to build with as Wanny and Saban( some savior in Alabama, they had the same season in Bama that they had last season with Shula, 6-6 and in the Independence Bowl) completely destroyed the team, but Cam is lost and the first sign was when they cut Randy McMichael and brought in David Martin. Not that McMichael is lighting it up for the Rams, but that is a poor decision and Cam's decisions have been poor all year. My feeling is they will go after Cowher or Schottenheimer, keep Mueller as GM, and build from there. Cowher is close to Marino now, and I'm sure that Marino has been serving as a go between with the club and Cowher all year, and Don Shula and Scottenheimer are very tight, so they could bring Marty in. Both those guys have their own problems but are light years away from the mess that is Cam Cameron. The idea is now to rebuild this mess, and Cowher or Marty can certainly do that. The Dolphins have 10 picks next year, three in the first two rounds, and I know people will say that "yeah, but the Dolphins drafts stink", but you have to remember that the 0-14 Bucs in 1976 went to the NFC Championship game in 1979, before losing to the Los Angeles Rams ( man, I miss the Rams being in LA) 9-0, so it is possible to rebuild this travesty. Let's hang in there Dolphins fans, we'll probably endure 0-16, and then see where they go from there. When you're a fan you have to endure the good with the bad no matter what drivel the franchise hands you to root for.

Beck's statement sounds so typicle... Nobody has a clue who's doing what .... As for the Cam ... He's cought in the crossfire .. I'm sure his intentions were good .. But it looks like he's just way over his head OR the team does not support him.. From the way it looks on the otside looking in .. Because thats where we all are .. Maybe the Cam could be good as an OC .. With a strong head coach to do the coach coaching .. But who knows what goes on behind clkosed doors .. I'm sure Big Wayne is on a mission to fix this mess...

If you had any knowledge about the game of professional football, then you would have known to ask the only pertinent question..... who 'SCRIPTED' the plays?

Did you just think this was all about who signals in the plays ?

You media people are 100 times dumber than 'I' had previously expected !

Yeah, that Marty Ball would look awful in Miami, because nobody wants to lose a playoff game every single year.

Wait, after six straight years out of the playoffs, that doesn't sound so bad. I wonder how all the Charger fans who hated Marty Ball like their Norv Turner ball...

Face it... there are no playmakers in the offense. Even with the best playcalling... it would not work.

Why is Cowher closer to Marino because they do a show together? So maybe Marino can get Sharpe to play TE for us in that case....People make some stupid comments sometimes! Really!

Didn't we hire Cam because of his offensive mind and play calling ability????
I didn't even realize Malarky was still on the staff...I thought he got fired after last year.

Cameron and Mueller screw up their opportunity. They inherit an average team not the worst, they decided to rebuild the team trading reliable veteran players for draft picks and their rookies are not good enough, they decided to keep offensive coordinator rol with Cameron rather than hire one or give the opportunity to Garret. They decided to have total control on the team and did not support veteran leaders, now they are losing the locker room. We can continue on and on the bottom line is they screw up their opportunity and now it is time for changes

The question wasn't wrong. When talking about scripting plays teams will script anywhere from the 1st to the 20th play of the game. That means they are going to have a list of plays they will run no matter what the score is or what the defense does 99% of the time. Scripting plays is different then calling plays. Teams do not script plays the whole game. Once a team runs through their scripted plays then it is based on many different factors that I don't have time or the need to mention.

I believe he was referring to the fact that the team does not go into the week against a particular opponent with the entire playbook. Teams will pull out a series of plays that they will use as a package for that Sunday based on their game plan, thereby narrowing the list of options available. Those laminated sheets of paper that you see on the sidelines contain the plays for that weekend's game plan vs. that particular opponent. The sheet will also assist with which plays to use when, based on down and distance. Therefore, the entire game is 'scripted' in that sense. Don't want to assume W-S, but I'm guessing that's what you were referring to.

Jason Garrett was as good as gone, no matter what Cameron or Mueller or Huizenga would have said to him. It was widely reported that Dallas is Garrett's dream job, and that if Jones came calling, he'd jump in a second. Garrett has said he'd like to be a head coach, and Jones lured him to Dallas with that promise of his dream job. I would still like to have seen him as a Dolphins coach, but it became clear that wasn't going to happen no matter how hard they tried to keep him.

After re-reading this article about the playcalling, I have to ask one question: WHY DOES IT MATTER? Cameron says all calls go through him. Green signaled in the calls after the call was made. I don't care if the calls come from on-high prior to that, but Cameron has taken responsibility for all of the offensive calls.

This is what is called - in the construction industry - as 'means and methods'. If this is how the Dolphins want to do it - their 'means and methods'- of running offensive plays, then so be it. And as in the construction industry, for someone outside the field, or someone with no responsibility in this, there really isn't any grounds for you to dictate their 'means and methods'. That's their business. So what's the big deal? Trying to find a story where none exists - and trying to fill a column - is apparently the deal here.

Is there anything right with this organization? Maybe we need to go Opposite George for a while. whatever cam and wayne are thinking, do the opposite. going to draft Glenn Dorsey, do the opposite, draft mcfadden. soon we are going to have to cut every single player on the roster, fire all the coaches and sell the team to some stranger. rebuild from day one. tear down the stadium while you are at it. this is just completely abysmal.

lets see, our arch rival goes undefeated, we go winless and favre and brady break all of marinos records all in the same season. i cant imagine anything worse. is this even real. am i stuck in some crazy nightmare and can't wake up? we are going to be like 30 poinnt underdogs to the pats in a couple of weeks. now chatman and booker aren't going to play this weekend. its going to take years to clean this up. years. its already been like 15 years since we were even in the conference championship game.
