I believe what is forgotten in the '90s is that the Raider QB play was not very good. In other words, Stabler and Plunkett could get Branch the ball. Is 4.25 vs. 4.4 that much of difference if the QB cannot connect with the WRs? The success of the WRs will depend on Russell or the QB play, not their 40 times.

If the height/weight/speed ratio wasn't of utmost importance, they wouldn't hold a combine every year. Obviously, there are many other intangibles and tangibles that make up a football player, and Al Davis is well aware of them. There is also a reason why Al has presented more players into the Hall-of-Fame than anyone else. No G.M./owner "wins" them all, but Al has "won" more than his share of them.

That is a fact. I always wonder how much better Tim Brown's numbers could've been if he'd had a superb QB for his early career. I never liked Jay Schroeder until Todd Marinovich came around and then begged for Schroeder back. Then came Jeff Hostetler who became the first Raider QB to make the pro bowl since Plunkett and was actually the first Raider QB to make the pro bowl his first year as a Raider, but struggled to stay healthy after that. I thought Jeff George should've been to the pro bowl his first year as a Raider, but being the most hated NFL player it's hard to get that honor. However, Brown's best connection (proclaimed by himself) was with Rich Gannon, who became second on the Raiders all time passing leader board in only 6 seasons. I was never really much of a Gannon fan, but I respected him because he helped make us a winning football team with his leadership on and off the field. It takes an accurate QB arm and good hands on a WR to make a good passing game before speed factors in. Gannon didn't have many speedsters to throw to, but they had good hands and moved the ball little by little to pick up first downs; managed the clock well; kept the defense off the field; and most importantly won football games. The Rich Gannon era proves to me that good hands are more important than great speed because if the receiver can't catch the football, his speed is of no use.
