uh oh, lets ban all alcohol over 3.2% beer and require testing and licensing of all consumers as well as registration of all 6 packs and a limit of 1 case per week to be purchased.

While we're at it, lets limit motorized vehicles owned by to civilians to one per person and limit the maximum speed to 80 MPH. Lets also limit the size of the vehicle to no more than 3 passengers. Put breathalyzer machines in every vehicle. Makes perfect sense, lets ban and over regulate everything. We need to prevent any and all forms of mishaps done by irresponsible, criminal mentally incompetent individuals, so in order to do that, lets not stop there, lets limit everyone's right to own or operate guns, vehicles, knives, baseball bats, bicycles, cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, carbonated beverages, fast food, junk food, matches and lighters, gasoline, drugs of every type, books, computers, cell phones.
I know, lets make it illegal to do anything, surely, then we will have a perfect lawful, safe utopia.

Careful - comparing (whether directly or indirectly) automobile deaths to gun deaths - even safety, isn't such a good idea anymore. Gun-related deaths are predicted to overtake automobile deaths well before the end of 2013.

Just in case you haven't realized it, I was using my extreme sarcasm font in both posts.
Doing any of the things I posted would not really solve the problem. we already have enough laws on the books addressing those issues. It would just take away the freedom of choice from law abiding Americans. We already live in a nanny state, where everything is regulated to the nth degree, except seat belts on buses.

I wonder where USA today got those numbers, they are severely different from the FBI's statistics. According to every other statistic I have ever seen, there are about 12,000 gun related deaths a year, with approximately half of them being suicides http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/unit... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_... http://www.everydaynodaysoff.com/2010/09/14/2...

Maybe we need to do more to regulate doctors

http://centerjd.org/cjrg/Numbers.pdf

65,000 to 200,000 The minimum annual number of deaths due to medical accidents, according to
hospital records. For comparison: The annual total of all other causes of accidental death is 98,000, of
which 46,000 are from auto crashes and 11,000 are from workplace accidents.
25,000 to 120,000 The minimum number of the above deaths due to negligence. That is, deaths caused
by medical malpractice each year.
