The fans want Russell - How bad an idea could it be?

There are 12 comments on the SFGate story from Nov 5, 2007, titled The fans want Russell - How bad an idea could it be?. In it, SFGate reports that:

“He'll play when he's ready to play”

Verily, the kid is closer to playing than you might think. The Raiders lost a soul-crusher to the Houston Texans on Sunday to hit midseason at 2-6 and sinking, and plenty of Raiders made plenty of mistakes, but ... via SFGate

According to the article, Russel will play when he is ready to play. It does not seem as if McCown or Culpepper were ever that much more ready either.

I understand kiff's logic. If you put him in too soon and he isn't ready it could ruin his mental game and that could screw his career. Sure plenty have been thrown in right away and some have worked but its a higher risk. Who knows, at this point I still think they should give Walter a chance, could he really do any worse?

I disagree. Walter was a lot worse. I don't think he could lead the team on one scoring drive.
Please put Russell in before Walter.

IF YOU PUT RUSSELL IN NOW IT WOUNT BE A MISTAKE. IF HE STARTS HIS FIRST GAME THIS YEAR HE HAS NO PRESURE, PEOPLE WILL UNDERSTAND. IF HE STARTS HIS FIRST SEASON NEXT YEAR. THERE MAY BE MORE PRESSURE ON HIS SOULDERS. THERE IS NOTHING TO LOSE THIS YEAR. JUST START THE GUY AND SEE.

IF RUSSELL WINS ONE GAME THIS YEAR THEN HE'S GOOD IN MY BOOK. THAT BEATS OUR RECORD FROM LAST YEAR. THATS A PLUS. IF HE ONLY WINS ONE GAME NEXT YEAR AS A STARTER THAN HE WILL BE A BIG MISTAKE. SO I SAY LET HIM GO IN WITH NO PRESSURE AND JUST DO YOUR THING. I SAY START RUSSELL. IF NOT START RONALD CURRY AT QB HE MIGHT DO ALOT BETTER THEN THE REST OF THE IDIOTS.

Some people said almost the same thing about Andrew Walter last year...As far as starting Curry at Quarterback...That would really turn some heads if he started leading us to victories

Walter pretty much got less of a chance than Tui, but if we get a quarterback that is supposedly our future, we need to play him. Walter got a better chance last year than Tui ever got in any one season, but he was in the middle of an offensive disasster. We could've picked up another decent quarterback in the second round if we took Peterson or Johnson in the first. I think Walter deserved at least one more season as a starter because nobody on offense played well last year and that is not his fault.

"Walter was a lot worse" refers to last year where he was expected to sit in the pocket after a seven step drop and throw it long. Very Raider-like and very-predictable. This year, he can hold onto the ball just as long as Culpepper can and receive the sack (or fumble). He is very capable of throwing three interceptions in one game like McCown. Hard to do worse. However, there is a chance that he can do better!

At this point I really don't care anymore. Put in the waterboy.

I have been a Raider fan since the days of Daryl Lamonica and George Blanda. These last few years have been hard to take. Losing is in their vocabulary and is acceptable to the team. Until that mentality changes teamwide you could probably put in Tom Brady and have the same result.
