Let me get this straight. The kid is a drunk. In fact, he was illegally driving on a suspended license...and he's only SUSPENDED from the team?!

Yeesh!

I though we were through with the mentality that junior felons belonged on football teams when we left Texas. How about tossing his precious behind in jail for awhile (like they do for regular, non-footie playing drunks who put other people's lives at risk) and putting someone who's serious about the game on the field?

So what else is new with so-called superstar atheletes? Most are as smart as a box of rocks. Make them actually have to pass those SAT or ACT tests.

Read the story - which ran when the kid was still due for a court hearing, which subsequently happened earlier today where he pleaded not guilty. He also has an outstanding warrant in Livingston County for his arrest after being arrested for driving on a suspended license and failing to appear for a court hearing.

As Zook said, ""We are aware of the situation. He has been suspended from the team indefinitely until we are able to gather all the facts. It's in the hands of the authorities right now and we will continue to monitor the information."

That's fair. After the legal stuff is resolved will come the time when Zook should be making a final determination about what to do with Josh Brent's team situation. Along the lines of what Desi would say to Lucy - "Josh, you got some 'splainin' to do!"

I'm from Bloomington and know all about this kid. This is a repeat of habitual behavior that has been going on since high school. This kid is a product of the "free pass" that never ends. He long ago discovered how to work the system since his own family members have looked to others to feed, house and basically raise him. It's a shame because he has relatives locally that are making some good money but choose to dump him on others. The enablers are many: junior high and high school coaches that let him operate on a different set of rules, high school teachers and administrators that let him get away with academic murder, and mentors that turned out to be anything but, all because they didn't want to wreck his chance at a college scholarship or wanted to be seen with someone they thought had a chance to make it to the NFL someday. Brent was smart enough to take advantage of every opportunity, just like any street-wise kid would. He has had a habitual subtance abuse problem since high school that many knew about, including the local media, and chose to sweep it under the rug. He has been begging and barrowing everything for a long time, including cars. The best lesson for Joshua Price-Brent is a conviction (because he is guilty as charged) and everything that goes along with it and withdraw of his athletic scholarship. He has the same problem as our President, no one has ever told him "no" and it shows.

Thanks for the info. Trouble is - a DWI and a couple driving with suspended license probably don't rise to the level where the legal system will undertake a good pre-sentencing investigation and a productive intervention. So Brent may well get out on the street, get drunk again, climb behind the wheel and then kill or maim someone. If there's drug abuse, then there's the potential for lots of other felonies and hazards to innocent people. There's more to this situation than getting kicked off a team, losing a scholarship and being booted out of school.

There's a parallel to the Ryan LeVin mess without all the family money, but nevertheless a connection to growing up spoiled. What a waste.
