Poor guy.
I'm sure all of the suspended players could form a new team.

You cheated death and yourself.

Mom will be proud.

Is this really the third most important story on Tribune.com this evening? Isn't the collapse of our financial system more important, whether Pres. Barry is going to nationalize our banks, etc....also more important than the DUI arrest of some 21 year old football player at the U of I. Must be a slow news day!

As a tax payer in Illinois, I'm sure that we all are paying for his college tuition as well.

Why do all these college athletes have suspended drivers licenses? And why are they driving? This seems to be an epidemic at Illinois. How many is this now between the Basketball and Football teams?? Hey Gunther - maybe you should make your student athletes take a course on the importance of having a drivers license if you are going to drive a car. Oh, and maybe through in a chapter on not drinking and driving. This is getting way, way out of hand.

these weasel editorial boards from Notre Dame or Indiana trying to make a big deal out of this. It is not a headline..
How many students are there? and how many crimes albeit on a small degree are recorded by Campus.
So is part of University students ...If it was Notre Dame, it would be in same paragraph but buried somewhere.
We are Illinois readers, and know what this means - nothing a big deal.. Dont embarass our state school Tribune.
Who are making the decision, bet those ND are working here.
Shape up and get rid of those weasels. Not in Illinois.

You don't exactly bring a lot of pride to the orange and blue by fabricating excuses as a rather pathetic attempt to distract yourself from the fact that Illini athletics has a problem. The University deserves better than this from it's athletes, students, alumni and supporters. As an alumni who received both my undergraduate and professional degrees from the U of I, frankly, I expect more from those that represent my school than the string of DUI's, probation violations, burglaries, and the like that have been plaguing CU for the past few years. It's an embarrassment and Gunther really needs to step up and let our athletes know that this is NOT acceptable behavior. My beloved alme mater deserves better than this.

Sure it's news - and a lot of us are interested! It qualifies as news if it happens at any big Midwestern school because a lot of alums and friends around here read the Tribune. Just because an athlete messes up, it's no reason to take it personally - unless drunk driving on suspended licenses is epidemic at your school. Got something on your conscience, perhaps?

College sports in general are out of control. Anyone who suggests otherwise is ill informed. The rule should be "one DUI and you're gone, and the full ride scholarship, worth nearly $200,000 these days is also gone" and the rule/law breaking athlete fool goes back home to bag groceries for minimum wage. Discussion over. There should be zero tolerance. I hope Coach Zook kicks him off the team for good.

Zook is going to have to stop hanging & chumming at the local Panera Bread on Kirby Ave every morning, and spend more time in the coaches meeting room figuring out new ways to maintain a close eye on his players. My suggestion, coming from a military guy, Zook should take command and initiate wingman policies with seniors or staff who sponsor/supervise the younger players coming in. It should be very straightforward, these kids are in a volatile moment and they are entering in a world of higher responsibility for their actions. A wingman structure would help reinforce the concept of teamwork on and off the field, and it would also protect Ole Zook's rear end from more embarassment.

Most of these bums wait until they are in the NFL before getting arrested. This guy is just trying to beat the rush (pun intended).

So, this article get's put on the FRONT PAGE of the Tribune Website, but the article about the Illini Basketball win over Ohio State doesn't even get listed under the sports heading?

What is wrong with the Tribune? When will you realize that the Chicago Tribune is based in Illinois, not South Bend?

What an ungrateful loser. Give his scholarship to someone who deserves it. College kids drink. Fine. Try walking. There are plenty of bars and frat partys within walking distance. This genius doesn't deserve to be on the team or at the school for that matter.
